Hi Paul,
Nice to have our children's friends model isn't it? When I first started portraiture I paid my children to model! (that made them much happier)

Mark's comments on lighting are right on. In addition to his, I would also emphasize using modeling lights. Most of the lighting kits have the modeling lights. Or, it's a lot of trial and error, which sometimes teaches us even more! (digital cameras certainly help) I agree, the main light could be a tad higher.

This particular image could also use more light on the background. Fortunately she has light colored hair, if it was dark you'd lose it in the background.

I agree with Roland about her fingers. But you did do a good job in not having her wrist flat and straight on, the side is always better. (plus it's usually more the color of the face as opposed to flat/straight on)

I think she needs a bit more expression in her eyes, and not so much white of the eyes.

Otherwise, a good pose...not still looking!
GREAT job on your first session. I still have some of my 'tries'.........but then I took a LOT of posing and lighting classes and seminars. Great books out there also!

Have a GR8 day/evening,
Lori :)

This one's kinda cool in a grunge-y kinda way. Another lighting set up you can do is slap a 3 x 4 ' softbox on your light and put it right above your camera (which should be on a tripod for this kinda work) so it hits her face evenly all across. When you light from the side you bring out all her little blemishes + the lines under her eyes This kind of lighting works really well with men (like a younger Clint Eastwood) where you want the lines and all to show cause it's kinda masculine. OR, you could have keep this light just like this (maybe put it a bit higher) and use a fill on the other side to make her skin look much smoother. Move it closer and futher back till it looks right. If you're using flash that's what the modeling light is for. If you want advice on what flash set up to get let me know and I'll tell you what I think would be rignt depending....check out B&H ( www.bhphoto.com ) in New York for the cheapest prices ANYWHERE (plus they carry EVERYTHING). Lighting looks complicated but it's really simple........

Excellent portrait of a beautiful model, good light and details. If you want suggestions I could suggest you something, but I believe that your son would become jealous, hahahahaha!!!!!!
I am joking my friend, congrats and God bless you: D

Not bad, like the lighting coming from the right & the catchlights in the eyes. My only comments is I find the skin tone too warm & the way her fingers are bent, I would've instructed Ashley to straighten it clutching her right cheek instead to give continuity from the hair going down to hands. Other than that Paul a good portrait, cheers.
