Marcus; Knowing full well you've received a bunch of opinions, I'll add one more... Sometimes I go by the instinct rule; after almost thirty years it separates from the "over analyzing". When I opened the photo...I just went "WoW", "How Cool Is That?" I only noticed the trees after it was brought to my attention by your comments, and others... Sooooo; IMHO the photograph is absolutely incredible, clear, balanced, and I suffer from "green envy"! Great shot Marcus, keep up the incredible work you do!!!

Cheers,

Bill

Thanks Steve, I appreciate you honest critiques, I like what you have done, though is very simular to the without tree version I posted above, I took this at a time when I was hearing alot of birds against blue skys, or moody skys for that matter were not as appealing as some background folage......

A spectacular capture, Marcus, with wonder detail and fine tonal values. I do agree that the tree under the chin should be taken out (see below). However, the shot is still wonderful.

I couldnt see the blue!:)LOL but i can see the moody sky!Well background trees always add to the overall appeal of a shot simply because it makes it more realistic and a part of the whole if you know what i mean:).

Hi Marcus,
You know I would vote to keep the out of focus trees in the picture. My take on that is that clouds, water, trees or any other kind of landscape can add significantly to the interest in wildlife images. I suppose you might find some people may say that detailed backgrounds can distract from the beauty of the bird. But that can be fixed with some nice DOF. Here is an example of one of your own images where a background works so well.

I prefer the more closer shot.

Hi Marcus! Iīd definitely clone out the trees on the left - I agree with Bruce. Your own attachment isnīt bad either ... hard choice :) Perfect exposure and beautiful pose/wings; great quality as always!

Ohh no, Marcus. It's good that you left the trees in, otherwise the image would look somehow artificial. Keep on with your fantastic shots.

Yes you should leave the tree in....IMHO...excellent mid-air capture Marcus...In florida you can walk right up to wihtin 6-8 feet of these guys

Thanks bill, thats seems to be the opinion so far and I tend to agree, nice natural background follage can be nice, but if in the wrong place can take away from the shot, appreciated..

Thanks Bruce, I was on the fence with the front tree, I agree with the examples crop also, Though If I had taken the front trees out it would have been cropped about the same as the post I think :). excellent critique.

Marcus, this is wonderful, you caputured so many details in his feathers. The lighting is beautiful-- DOF perfect. I don't mind the tree in the shot at all, the heron draws all the attention to it's big, beautiful self.

I like your shots that show a little of the birds environment (actually come to think of it I like them all). However in this case I find the trees on the left a bit distracting and would prefer them to be removed. You could crop a bit off the right also but I wouldn't crop as close as in your example, I think it needs a bit of room on the left for the heron to fly into.

Hi Marian I was hoping you would comment seeing my work over the years, I have begun to change some of my shots from the bird against the sky to a bit more of a compostion with trees left in, a bit of a wider shot etc.. I will post an example of what my typical shot of this bird would look like..
Thanks girly :)
