hi Marcus, I came here because I was reading all about the Nortons thing, and putting in my somewhat useless two bobs worth (don't start me on terns!) as you do, I believe that there is no substitute for beautifully executed work and all your shots are so, just amazing, whether a fan of ornithological studies or not, your compositions are exceptional, imao. cheers, david.

What can say Marcus but superb. Detail, sharpness and background meld to make a perfect shot. Your photography does wildlife a great justice and you should be proud of yourself.

Hi again Yamil,
Maybe it's because the two are very difficult to compare. This photo Marcus posted shows much more of the environment, the habitat, which IMO adds to the appeal of the photo, and create a stronger story telling element. I like that in a photo, but that's obviously a subjective observation. The preying (praying?) birds against the blue sky are technically as impressive, but I think they offer less to the viewer in terms of narrative element, but that doesn't mean they're not as proficient / professional or good; that's another explanation of "a different level".
My initial comment (had to read back a few of my comments on Marcus' photos) was a reference to my comment on http://www.usefilm.com/Image.asp?ID=1101473, (and the ones following that photo) where Marcus addressed the intimidating part. We've also discussed this a bit in the chat.
I'm also a photographer and a member, and enjoy usefilm, like I said, because I find it stimulating and educational, and it helps me greatly to improve my skills, your challenge being a very good example. I'm not sure I should voice my opinion differently, each member is of course entitled to his / her own opinion, and to decide what to do with any comment. Moderator or not, I don't think that has anything to do with the value or importance of a comment. Again, I like to see that as two different things too.
As to misunderstanding (or not), my initial comment was (at least meant to be) very positive; I have a passion for nature too, but never managed to get even remotely close to capturing such a moment as this one. I'm still completely behind my initial comment.
I've attempted a quite few of these shots with a manual focus zoom lens when I started with photography. I just haven't posted them on usefilm. I also attempted to shoot running hares (with a camera) at full speed, which is also not very easy, so I'm not completely without reference. (Incidentally, have you seen my last upload? Technically, it has its flaws, but I like Mary Sues comment, and think she has a point that including a bit of the scenery would've been nice...
I just browsed my files, and I've recently backed up quite a few of the older ones, and they are in storage now, so I hope to go out and actually take the shots this weekend; I attached a sneak preview
I'm also curious on Marcus' views on my comment, if he thinks my comment was unfair, I stand corrected and appologise...:)
Cheers,
Hugo

Hi Hugo, Thank you for your reply and positive feedback. I still a bit confuse with your comments. If you say that this shot have more to offer than a predator on a blue background, I find a contradiction when you said that birds in flight is the top level. Coincidentally right after I posted my last shot, another “predator against the blue sky”
http://www.usefilm.com/image/1119840.html
I read your comment in Marcus’s Image and it upset me because my interpretation was a lack of appreciation for this difficult skill. And in your position as a moderator, your opinions influence others. With my nature images I want to share with UF users the wildlife interactions that I witness and I find the subject of birds in flight very challenging, enjoyable and inspirational. I don’t think I misunderstood your comment. I can take this image (feed me) from the seat of my car. Still, I truly enjoy this behavioral shot but I have a hard time digesting your comment You specifically wrote that: “I think these shots have so much more to offer than the wingspan of a predator against the blue sky”. But you are entitled to your own opinion.
Also, you mentioned that you know about the challenges and difficulties involved in this discipline, but if you haven’t done it, how come you understand? Your knowledge is probably theoretical but putting those skills in practice is a different ball game. Any way, I am glad that you accepted my challenge and thank you again for taking the time to respond. I look forward seeing your animal in motion series. Take care. Yamil

Hi Yamil,
I think you widely misunderstood my comment, but I appreciate you sharing your thoughts, and I'll gladly pick up that challenge.
I know all to well how difficult it is, and the " league" I was talking about is one of the top level, and I find both your and Marcus' photos extremely impressive - it was a comment written out of awe, and if you read my previous comments to Marcus, you'll realise it's a sequel, referring to what I commented on his other photos.
Reading back my comment about "Predator against the sky" I realise it could've sounded a bit degrading , but it wasn't intended as such.
The difference is in approach, and regardless of the skills required, I find this type of photography more appealing (aesthetically, that is)
Like I said, I'd gladly take up that challenge, and although I don't think my photos of birds in flight are remotely as good as yours and Marcus', I'll post a series of three animals in motion starting next week. I'm well aware of the challenges and (technical) difficulties, as well as the sacrifices required to take such photos.
As to your advise, I doubt I'll be more careful in the future, I believe Usefilm is about discussing photography and sharing those thoughts. You may or may not agree, and see things differently, but I do take the time to assess an image, and write down my thoughts about it. It helps me improve as well as learn from the skills of others. Besides, commenting in general deals with subjective issues, such as taste and preferences, which is open to all levels of expertises, and it's not an issue of right or wrong. (although there is such a thing as poor, good, better and best, and I firmly believe the "predator against the sky" photos fall into the latter category)
Cheers,
Hugo

Marcus, excellent shot Master. Those behavioral shots are one of my favorite subjects. I will try to stop by that Island tomorrow afternoon and tried to get this lovely couple. Also. I wanted to respond to Mr. Hugo de Wolf comment on this pic. Hi Hugo, I hope you are doing well. If I were you, I will be more careful commenting about a “league” that you don’t play. I haven’t seen in your portfolio a single shot of birds in flight or anything closer. Landscapes, visas to Iran, bartenders, bridges and so on, don’t move and the degree of difficulty is a lot lower than shooting fast moving targets. Almost anybody can get a shoot of motionless subjects. But shooting birds in flight, requires of good weather, packing your gear early morning, (5-5:30 AM) been in good physical condition, a lot of walking, knowledge about the natural history of the species, their habitat and getting the image that you one without disturbing their normal pattern of behavior, and lots of good luck. Do not get my wrong, although I do not comment on your images, I appreciate them. But I don’t thing you understand when you said that Marcus image “feed me” (quoting you) “have so much more to offer than the wingspan of a predator against the blue sky”. Tried and them we can talk about it. It’s up to you if you accept the challenge. For now I will recommend you not to make subliminal derogatory comments about “predator against the blue sky”. Cheers. Yamil

Hi Marcus, Just fantastic once again! I understand completely what Hugo was saying about this kind of image having so much more to offer than your standard "predator against the sky" images. The composition of this one is definitely award worthy!!!
And I will say the same as Hugo... don't get me wrong about the bird against the sky images... I think they are all fantastic too. You make a difficult job look easy when you post that kind of image. I'll bet there are very few people here that are capable of getting that kind of quality out of birds in flight. You spoil us with those posts. Everyone expects excellence as common-place from your posts. :) Andre

Thanks Maryam, The background is original as the small island is on the water and these are shorebirds, the birds were closer to me than the water and with a shallow dof you get this effect.. Thanks again..

Hi Marcus,
I think these shots have so much more to offer than the singspan of a predator against the blue sky (don't get me wrong - they're as good, technically as well as appealing, but they're in a different league)
The two birds, as well as the meticulous timing is great. Very well exposed too, and not including a horizon might be a pheripheral feature, but I think it's pretty important in removing any distraction there might be.
The only thing I can think of is that a notch more saturation in the yellows and perhaps the greens would make the internet presentation a tad stronger, but either way, it's a great catch!
Cheers,
Hugo
