This picture was conceived in response to a Kodak competition called "Colours of the Coming Age". I felt the "coming age" was the yet unborn children, and wanted to picture the hope for a better environment for them. I needed a kind of nuclear wasteland background so I used a photograph I had taken down near Aramoana, a half hour drive from here. It was taken approximately one week after a gunman committed mass murder there, killing 13 people in a tiny and peaceful seaside community, and I wanted to express my shock and sadness about that, hence the bleakness.
The figure was a friend of mine, four days before she gave birth to her twin daughters.
The flowers were brought in to work by a colleague, and as soon as I saw them I realised they were the element needed to complete the image, having as they did a sort of "exploding into life" quality, and being so colouful in the otherwise relatively colourless background.
Funnily enough, after I had split and flipped the background, necessary to fit it into the lighting of the figure, I found that it too, contained a very female shape, ie, breasts, and a vagina, signifying the previous generation before the woman.
This was never used for the original concept, as one of the requirements of the competition was that the image had to be on Kodak film, and the digital to film printer I had access to was only set up for Agfa film.. C'est la vie!

I vaguely recall some Canadian suggesting it many moons ago and I have been using it since. :)
Enjoyed your slide shows, specially the balcony garden, and will look at more later.

Thank you for your comment John. I did as you suggested, removing the flowers, to see how it looked, and ended up with what I felt was over half the image having too little detail. There didnt seem to be enough to hold the composition together.

You are right John. I have several versions of this image and while the 8 x 10 version made it into print, this was a version sized for direct sending online, and I used this as it was already sized, instead of reducing the slightly wider one.
The difference would be that the online one would be about 3mm narrower if they were both printed at 8" x 10" size.

Takes me a while Jim, but I get there in the end - responding I mean.
In reply to your comment, I enjoyed your closer image. The colour "in the water" was moss growing on the rock at the edge of the pool. Very hard to get a correct exposure when I wanted to include the sky, so I confess to shooting them separately with two exposures and montaging them.

Thank you for your comment Greg. It didn't really take a long time, more like a wet Saturday morning. The selection process took the longest. I found choosing the right image to insert was more difficult than I had thought it would be, and I ended up with something quite different from the original concept.

Micky, Congratulations on Staff Choice! I love the way the cloud shape mirrors the mountain skyline, and the monochrome-colour has its own particular appeal.
Beautiful contrasts and tonal qualities.

No wonder you liked my mountains Coral, so many of your images have similar elements and this one has the curve of the water AND the foreground flowers.

Thank you for your comment on my mountains Greg, and thank you even MORE because I missed this, being sound asleep at the time. Beautiful sky! I wish I had seen it. Would a crop of most of the lights help as that is where my eye wants to go? Perhaps just leave the top of the hill at the right?

Andrej, I love your landscapes. The Dolomites trip must have been a great experience. I agree with Alastair that the Bovec Valley image is somewhat oversaturated and also the one before that.
This is the one I like the BEST, and I have taken the liberty of tweaking it a little in PS to lessen the yellow cast in the snow and sky. I used Image >> Adjust >> Levels >> and then used the white eyedropper in the Levels window on the snow highlights on the highest peak, then faded the effect to 60%.
Feel free to disapprove ! 
I love the Ghost Town image, as I have been to some of these places and they fascinate me.
Thank you so much for you comments on my lupins and on the Alpine Summer image. I had problems with the colour in that also and I am not sure I have it right yet.

Fern your images are a delight. Acute and intimate observations of the textures and colours around us.I am glad you commented on my Stones as it enabled me to come and see your work.
And yes... I have used embroidery and beads.. see attached example which was printed on Lysonic Standard Fine Art paper. Isnt it wonderful where we can now go with the aid of computers.

David, the head is not a digital creation. It is a glass head I found in a second hand shop, took home, stuffed with tissue paper to create the "brain" and shot from all angles using various lighting modes. The sky is just a sky from any old day, I dont recall, and the "ground" is created from a wall of glass bricks I found in a restroom in a small NZ town while travelling... of such things dreams are made.
