Having worked in the container industry myself some years ago I can see the attraction of this subject matter. Rotterdam Port is huge so you are spoiled for choice. You don't need to hear from me but this is compositionally suberb. My eye starts off moving down the gang plank from the ship. The light trail from the car takes me nicely accross the road with the help of the white road paint which could even draw an eye into the scene. From there its up the stairs which are that extra bit defined by the strong shadow cast against the metal wall. These stairs also give the image good scale. The beams on the roof are in effect arrows which whisk the eye back to the boat and down the gangplank again. Round and round we go! Good work

This man's name is Michael, I cannot remeber his second name but he is the owner of a famous Butcher's Shop in the heart of Waterford City. Its very peculiar because he is open every day but does not sell any meat! Instead he has a steady stream of friends and curious punters coming in to him. He told me that people seem to like coming in for a sit down, chat and to watch the people pass by. The shop itself is on one of the busiest shopping streets in the city so it really does stand out. Luckiy there is a preservation order on the building so it is practically untouchable for the time being at least. Many times I have passed and reminded myself to go in and ask him could I get a few images. Last week I had my camera and ended up spending an hour in there, he had some interesting stories. I came away with about 9 very useable images so I will post at least another 4. The colour was kept in balance to the surroundings, over-saturation just would not look right! ..

Ian .. what do you do for a living mate??! Seriously, you find yourself in the most spectacular locations and always at the right time .. you are like Ray Mears with a serious interest in photography! I like his one because the reflection almost looks photoshopped, but, being familiar with your work I understand this is not a practice you engage in. Right time, right place - all because you made your own luck. Jolly good show old bean!

Hi Barry,

No entry for me this year I'm afraid - I've made the leap from amateur to professional so it defeats any purpose entering! I'm at it about 6 weeks - just working on the marketing side of things at the minute .. it will take time bit I'm sure I will get somewhere with it!

Your image should do well for Round 3 .. its the type of image that the judges will go for because its so different. Plus its technically superb too .. best of luck!

The above image was for a commercial job .. it has more impact when viewed as a large print .. then again what doesn't!

Rgds,
Shane

Hi Barry,

We both seem to be quiter than we were last year! From my point of view; I seem to be busy with commercial work lately which is not a bad complaint really. After that and my day job its hard to find the time to do anything else. I noticed that the "hobby" aspect of my photography certainly took a nose dive as a result of not entering APOY. Last week I picked up the magazine and noticed that this year's scoring is quite low too. So all in all I think its better to give it a go. I'll have a look at the themes and make a final decision then.

The above is something I've been at for a while. Using PT Gui you can get incredible results. I'm a fan of ultra wide angles so its perfect for me!

What have you been at yourself of late?

Really really good work there mate. I personally love the tonal range you managed to achieve - obviously with the help of the grad but still that in itself is a task in itself to perfect. Your toning is A1 too .. plus icing on the cake is producing a sharp image in those conditions .. I dont comment on a lot of images but I find myself remarking on most of your posts. Great body of work.

This scene would have worked very well as a panoramic .. stitching images taken in portrait mode together .. www.ptgui.com is a great tool for the job if you havent used it before .. I am in the middle of stitching a 17 frame 360 together at the moment .. great fun!

Anyway your stuff looks good, nice colour there .. I'm going to have a browse through it now. Drop me a line anytime to: info@aspectphotography.net .. I havent been uploading anything personal onto this site due to commercial work but thats never a bad complaint! I did get up to the Comeraghs earlier so I might have a look and see if theres anything worthy of a post. Right, I'll have a browse .. talk soon .. Shane
