I was wandering the dunes of Misty Cliffs when I spotted this plant on the side of a dune. I looked up and saw the deepening blue sky, the mountain and the moon. For the first time I had a vision of the end photograph. Pro's always talk about "envisioning" their photographs and while I was sure it was a good thing I was still having a good time just taking photographs without much "vision." While this shot did not come out exactly as I wanted it too (sky is way too blue, navy in places) it is pretty close to what I had in my minds eye, and that made me feel quite good; To have seen something, applied what I know in execution and then come out with something pretty much what I imagined.
IMO Velvia was the wrong choice for this photograph, but that was the film in my body at the time. The dune, plant and mountain all don't need the colour saturation of Velvia and the sky has suffered a bit from it (as well as from the polariser I admit.) Still, I like the result a lot. I am going to go back with some B&W film (the location is just down the road from me) and see how that comes out. Any other improvements you can think of are appreciated. Thank you and enjoy!
Very nice work. Personally I like the dark sky, makes it appear like a early night shot with good lighting in the foreground. Nice detail in the windblown sand just below the plant. The only thing I would have changed would have been to put the moon a bit more towards the right, but that's just personal taste.
