I like this photo. I don't know much about lighting but I know composition. It's perfect. The color red suits and her expression tells it all. Wonderful picture.

You're right! I should have had a kicker light on the camera or lowered the main light somewhat. Good catch!

Yes, her expression is quite lovely. If I may add some thoughts, I do realize you were changing film but I would have liked to see the main light lower to cast some light into those expressive eyes. I am tall and find sometimes I forget that my subjects need to have a lower light but I am only mentioning this as it is something I too forget. I am sure you got many wonderful portraits of your niece. :)
