About This is a detail of some stones near Janet's Foss - taken with the 200mm F2.8 so I didn't get too near the water! was rather fast.

THink I may have sharpened it a little too much in this 800pixle version. the original looks more natural.

Thanks ade for the info. I have started playing around with Raw but I don't have CS2 version of P/shop to do the conversions so getting them into P/shop is a challenge but I can tunnel my way around that by converting to TIFF. I don't know if I should be doing that but it's the only way I can go with RAW utill I upgrade to CS2 which I think I will do shortly. I haven't delved into the white balance settings to play around yet but I will do so. Memory isn't an issue for me so I will try to remember to shoot all my iamges in RAW next shoot. Come to think of it I believe I shot my Metropolis image of the mushrooms in RAW and the colour in that came out really rich. Also time isn't an issue with me either as I'm not in a hurry when I shoot photos and also I don't take action shots so I don't need the faster FPS mode. As you say not show stoppers for me either. All good points thougha nd I appreciate you taking the time to explain this to me.

Thanks also for taking the time to view and comment on my images.

Cheers - Ann :)

PS I was kind of hoping to see Stephen's mug shot on the front page too. Might still happen when you least expect it. :)

Magnificent, Ade!
Great colours and detail.
It doesn't look too sharp to me.
Best regards, Chris

Cheers Ann,

When I resize them to 800 I use IrfranView, a freeby image viewer. That's got a sharpen function on it and I often polish them with that before posting - can be quite crude at times, but usually works. SOme of the leaves looked a bit harsh on my monitor.

I'm a huge proponent of RAW, been telling al the UK UF people to ditch JPG for ages now. It's one of the things that's taken my images from where they were last year to the ones I'm cranking out now.

You can bring out detail in a RAW taht just isn't there in JPG - especially when you have a dark foreground and light sky. I use 2 curves layers to deal with the sky and land separately as they have different "needs".

As for the warmth - it's just a case of altering the white balance in post processing. I warm up most times but you can cool down as well to get some more sinister effects. If you've never tried it - set your camera to "Tungsten" white balance and take a few shots outside. They will be blue!!! With RAW you can change this, without loss, when you open the shot in PS.

it's superb.

I think the reasons people don't like RAW are...

File size - 6Meg on a 10D, 8Meg on a 20 etc.

Storage speed - some cameras take a few seconds to store a RAW and you miss shots cause of it.

Frames/second rate goes down. I think the 20D does 5 FPS in JPG but less in RAW

You can't see RAW thumbnails in Windows, but you can with JPG's

They are all inconvenient, but not show stoppers. If you really don't have many CF cards then fair enough, shoot JPG :-)

I've got 4 or 5 GIG, so enough for a day out :-)

ha ha -= I was expecting your mug to get a BIP, or PoD at least!!!!

It's a cracker even though there is a cmall crack in the front lens. When I bought it I took 30 shots and examined it on his PC - not a sign of any evidence. Bargain for the money really.

Excellent Ade, love the colours and the crop.

That lens is just great for scenes like this - crap for portraits though as the one of me shows lol

Best wishes,
Steve

Looks pretty darned good on my screen ade. Wonderful water flow and beautiful clarity as usual. I love the warmth of that RAW format. Wonder why everyone doesn't shoot RAW. Do you think it's a case of some people don't like the warmth it gives? Is there some other reason that RAW isn't the most popular shooting mode? Just curious. This almost looks 3 dimensional. They just keep getting better ade. I really enjoy your work and into my faves this one goes. Thanks

Cheers - Ann :)

I see what you are saying about the excessive sharpening but I think that creates an interesting effect and textural contrast with the water soft blur of the water. I like it.

Super 'slowmo' shot!!! Yep a bit too sharp but nevertheless a wonderful and colorful image, beautiful colors, super silky/milky water and excellent composition.... well captured!!! BTW I've 'softened' it back and it does look much better.... ;-D!!!
