Thanks to everyone for the comments. These blue darners are sort of territorial when they get into a mating frenzy. I found a clearing in the woods where several had staked out claims and waited for one to hover within shooting range for a few seconds. I used a tripod in monopod mode (legs folded) and kept the ballhead loosened. Focus was manual (the 20D/300f4 combo could not keep up). Out of ~100 frames I got ~10 keepers after considering sharpness, exposure, and body and wing position. This one wasn't the sharpest of the bunch, but I like the body and wing position. The mating activity is over so I'll have to wait until next summer to try this again. Thanks again,,,,David

What a super catch!!!! Super DOF and detail, great colors and excellent composition... well captured!!! I won't even try to take a shot like that... even if I did have the camera for it... to get it in focus that good while the thing is comming at you... and they aren't too slow either... amazing!!!! Full marks for effort and pulling it off that good.... ;-D!!
