Difficult, but hard to improve on this, I would say. The toning looks good, and you have a full range from black to white with details in both. A fine, relaxed family portrait. Coming from such a big negative, I expect the print is sensationally sharp!

Thanks Becky - having a camera without a built-in light meter has its advantages. I carry this old handheld meter and in a situation like this it is easy to get just an incident light reading and not have to spend any more time thinking about what a good exposure might be.

What I like most about this photo is that while it's a portrait, there's still an element of the casual to it, which allows the personality of the participants to shine through. I think you did a great job with the toning and exposure . . . I think I'd rather have perfectly exposed whites and underexposed blacks than the other way around - mostly because you can usually coax out some detail from the dark. There are no details lost on the shirts and the sky in the upper left is not overpowering, so I say good job!

Hi Stefan,
interesting project! I know how hard it is to get a group of people get togehter right for a photo shooting. That's a pain in the a*s. You did very well. The black dog adds some interest =)
best wishes, Thilo

What photography is for! (At least when one is a family man. One can always justify it: "But I take loads of pictures of the kids!") Friends and family photographs are the ones that are really looked at when the years go by I guess. I'm going to step up my picture-taking of my children. It seems like they're growing and changing before my eyes. Of course I don't want to stop this, but I want to see it -- everything about it -- and that's what the camera is for. "Group photos" are darn difficult. I know, I've tried a few with mixed success. You've done well, it's charming. Rgds, Svend

Very nice family portrait Stefan, I like the relaxed, casual every day look. A nice variety of expressions and characters. The fact that the little girl is engaged with the dog adds to the charm of the photo. I find myself doing more and more of my photos in a similar tone to this shot. Those sepia tones are just so appealing to the eye. Andre

A black dog is one of the great challenges of the family portrait. You pulled it off, splendidly.

But you succeded - there?s information everywhere, in the dark parts as well as in white (well almost). A perfect format for this group portrait! Nice done Stefan!

LOL... I love the devil dog, so nicely placed admist the photographic leaves. Your dog looks way too content in that costume! I like the family portrait... the toning gives it a sense of time-passing, although I see your daughter in there so I know it's recent. (Stefan, are you hiding behind the camera??) Tough challenge, but I think you've pulled it off nicely. I hope it prints well for you!

so sweet the expression of love / delight in the little girl vis the pooch ? the only one not engaged with the photographer? but what she ?says? speaks volumes ;-) This is a fine family picture Stefan ? an expressive and well directed shot and a ?pure? image in many ways! The viewer senses much about all the players and that is one thing which makes a group shot successful.
Enclosed a quick shadow / highlight play on the dog?

Or wear something more photographically appropriate - not too much to ask, do you think? :-)

This is a really nice group portrait, Stefan! Everybody in it looks good and has a natural expression. I can see your predicament with the bright whites and the dark dog! Someone needs to tell that dog to lighten up! :)
