Thanks for your suggestions... The shot was taken in the afternoon (but not as late as you had mentioned) with a window to my back right. (you can see from the reflection in her eye). The window had a white paper shade that helped to defuse the light. It was a spur of the moment thing so I had hoped that the DOF would hide the background. Even with the DOF blur, I wasn?t sure if the unkempt background was too distracting. Thanks

Sharp image, great DOF, wide perspective for a recession into space.

I would not change the background - you appear to have it blurred out due to the DOF of the shot.

Maybe I'd suggest trying different angles and perspectives?

If you are really concerned about the background you probably have to shoot with the subject looking into the window with the strongest lighting - then the subject will be lit and the sunlight will fall off pretty dramatically resulting in a dark background. Also sunlight at late afternoon should give you a really nice sidelight for popping out those individual details and highlights on the eyes.

This is a good portrait of the dog, and I wouldn't touch the background at all.
