Hi Nigel,
I did some research on the web (no pun intended) and found out that the females are considerably larger and have the large body to accomodate the egg sacks. The males hang around the edges of the females web and make small webs of their own. They pluck strings on the females web to attract them for mating purposes. Quite fascinating.
Oh, and the have big b*lls. ;^)
