About Roaring River Falls in Kings Canyon National Park. I took this about a month ago. I have another image of the same waterfall in my portfolio, but this is another angle and a more recent photo of the falls

Thanks for the advice Michael. I didn't have a tripod with me. I need to carry one at all times. I'll have to wait until spring and bring a tripod to get a better shot.

Hey David -

Deep shadow, tough shot to meter. I think the waterfall highlights are a bit blown out, but overall a good shot straight on.

If you have a tripod, something you do not mind strapping to your back, I'd take it with you and set it up as low and close to the waterfall as possible with a nice wide angle to capture the drama. I've got a couple waterfall shots and always like the ones that are right on top of the falls.

Since metering is a beast, especially with these harsh shadows, I can only recommend that you bracket like all get out and then use the Photoshop HDR funtion or choose the best shot.

Also, with a tripod you can go for the highest F-Stop and hopefully shoot over 1s exposures for that nice veiling.

nice shot... your highlights are realy blowing out tho try spot metering on the whitewater and see if it leads to a better result. Whilst it may mean u will lose some details in the shaded areas on the rocks that is perhaps more acceptable than a burnt out highlight.
