About Hey Marcus, can you tell me what bird this is? I have no idea. I found this guy sitting on a street light this evening. He kind of hopped from light to light which made it easy for me to get some shots.

Thanks David.

I'll start saving for a Nikon D2H, already have a bunch of lenses that will fit.

Hawks, especially buteos, generally go from here to there, and are somewhat predictable but hummers are a different story.

thanks so much sammy for letting me know what bird it is. I feel a little embarraced not knowing what I photograph. I can id almost any dolphin species but when it comes to birds I know very little.

Yes this was done with autofocus. The AF in the Nikon D2H is very good and fast. Even if you can't keep your subject in center the AF will "follow".

Fuji's digital SLRs are basically Nikon cameras with Fuji's own sensors (they are very good!). I have no idea what kind of a deal these two companies have but all Fuji dSLRs are based on mid level Nikon cameras that don't have the same AF module that you can find in the top Nikon cameras. So to answer you question, the D2H(s) & D2x have a better AF system than the Fuji. But this shot would have been no problem for the Fuji or smaller Nikon cameras.

The dark mark on the leading edge,
on the underside
of the upraised wing,
makes this a

Red-tailed Hawk
(Buteo jamaicensis)

"Redtails" sport a variety of plumages depending on age and locality. They can be seen year round in most of the USA. In the very northernmost states you might see them only in summer.

This is an awesome shot.
Did you use autofocus?
I'm wondering if Nikon
auto focus is surer and/or
faster than Fuji.

Lovely shot, David. Your prime has given excellent sharpness and clarity to the photo that is seldom possible using a zoom...
