thanks Sue, to be honest, the poppy flowers were impressive, but the sky and the clouds was the key thing that made the difference to get all my photos from there.

Excellent capture... amazing clarity & colours.. & those clouds! WOW... wonderfull... they look so low to the ground & fluffy... the way clouds are meant to be (lol.. I live in UK... been a while since we seen the blue sky over here let alone such brilliant clouds)

Well done
Sue xx

David Hofmann   {K:22223} 4/8/2005
thanks Ken, yes those clouds were really low. That day, when I took photos, I was undecided wheather I should give the wonderful sky or the flowers more weighting in my photos.

David Hofmann   {K:22223} 4/8/2005
Hi Liz, thanks a lot.

the general rule sure is the smaller the f-stop the more depth of field. But that doesn't mean when you do landscapes you should always use f/22.

Actually its not a good idea to use smallest f/stop on your lens at all for two reasons.

first, while the DOF increases once you go past f/8 towards f/22 or smaller the image becomes more soft. Yes as paradox as it sounds it is true. The reason for this is called diffraction. A light ray that passes by an object (like the blades of the iris) gets bend a little. Now the smaller that hole is (f-stop) the larger the portion of light rays that have to pass near the blades is thus the more diffraction you get. The result is that your entire photo becomes softer.

Here is a page that explains it with samples:
http://www.juzaphoto.com/articles/diffraction_and_lenses.htm

The second reason is reflection of the image sensor. The smaller the f-stop the more parallel and perpendicular the light rays reach the sensor. The rensor reflects part of that light back to the lens where it causes flare. The larger the f-stop the smaller the portion of those reflected light is. Its less a problem on film but much more with digital cameras. Some manufacturers have started to coat their lenses to minimize those problems.

In the end that means you want the smallest f-stop to get the depth of field you want but really not smaller than necessary either.

For this photo I should have used f/5.6 or f/8 as it would have given me way enough DOF for this shot.

all that stuff is pretty technical I know :) but the good thing is you can forget it and reduce it to a single rule of thumb: use an f-stop as small as necessary but not any further.

thanks Erik, yes it is all about the flowers. I'm actually not so much a fan of flower photography, but this year I was drawn into it. :)

Nice one David! Great colors and curve of the road. The only minor distraction for me is seeing the cars down the way, but what can you do? Flowers are "in" this year in Southern California. They're the talk of the town.
cheers,
Erik

David Hofmann   {K:22223} 3/24/2005
thanks Bryan! I think poeple who hide their "secrets" are worried they might loose some advantage. I don't think that competitive.
My PS work is realtively mild and could be done in a traditional dark room, too. It would just take much longer and I don't have one :)

Some artists do real photo art (like Mitchell Miller) which is fine. But as you say, some do heavy PS work and deny they did. I have been working in visual effect for feature films for many years. I have dealt with all the problems so I have a good eye to spot them out :)

thanks again, I really enjoy your work also a lot. You have a very natural way to show people.

Bryan Miller   {K:3395} 3/24/2005
david - it is a lovely photo. but I think what I enjoy most is your candid-ness in discussing photoshop. I see so many fotos of the landscape and know that much photoshop effort has gone into the final image -- yet the fotographer denies the use of any post-processing. For some reason that really troubles me.

But not you. you lay out exactly what you did and I think that is brilliant!!! I believe that is good for everyone. I believe it is especially good for other photographers as they can learn from your description and learn how to be more open.

Very natural looking foto as well. Well done David and thanks for sharing critical information.

What a great scene and capture, your work left this image as one of exceptional job, seeing those cars parked here and there, its like here in my country after a rain people get out from the city deep into the desert for relaxing week end. superb.Saeed

Thanks Jan. Coming to Usefil actually got me interested in landscape photography. I learned to much here about it by just looking at the work from others here. That's the wonderful thing about photography. There are so many subjects, one never runs out of inspiration.

Great landscape Dave, the PS work is very natural and creates a dramatic image. The cars don't bother me at all, and show a human element this is fine with me. The one rising steep hill is probably my favorite part of this shot, the green & brown colors on it are great.

Cheers,
Chris

Wow this is an outstanding landscape ! Or a skyscape... Looks really 3D, and selective work on tones and colors is masterly performed. You are right, this kind of clouds is a great requisite, and your camera position, FOV, and composition are just perfect. First, I did not recognize the cars, then I thought "crop them out" - and at last, I would say, leave them there, cropping them out would not improve the shot. No nitpick from me, this time ;-)

David Hofmann   {K:22223} 3/21/2005
Thanks very much Melanie. I don't know what the next real city was, but I think it was Lancaster. It was a couple of miles west on "Ave I" from the I-14. We didn't go into the actual park as there was a very long line of cars at the entrance. There are plenty of poppy fields along that road. I took so many photos, I have to process them the next couple of days. The best thing today was the clouds. They looked so cool and made my shots so much better.

GORGEOUS, David! I love the angle andperspective, I feel like I am being drawn in! The clarity, sharpness, detail, and color are excellent, it feels very 3 dimensional. The landscape and clouds are all so beautiful I didn't even notice the cars at first glance, this would be absolutely perfect if they weren't there... but you have control over so much! LOL An incredible shot, regardless ) Where was this taken? What city?
