Thanks again for writing, Mary! Too bad we didn't have great weather for the Perseids peak this year. Lets hope we get some good auroras and observing soon, to make up for it!

Hi Shane,
Thanks!! It's really too bad we lucked out for the Perseids peak :0( I was so much looking forward to an exciting night of meteor photography. I guess we had the run of clear dry weather in the week before the peak.
Oh well... Hopefully, better luck for the next shower. I guess the way to see it is if it's too easy, then it becomes boring, right?

Hello Ellen,
Thanks!! Photographing meteors is not easy... it takes a lot of luck. The meteors move very fast and last usually only a fraction of a second. It's almost impossible to point-and-shoot when one goes by. Instead, the trick is to mount the camera on a tripod, use a fast ISO and wide-angle lens opened to maximum, open up the shutter on bulb for a few minutes..... and hope that a meteor goes by then field of view. Most of the exposures will likely have only stars, but if you're really lucky you might see a fireball (very bright meteor) go by, and there's nothing quite like the trill of capturing a cosmic streaker!
The meteors captured here were on my very first exposure of the night. All the other exposures taken over the next couple hours failed to capture anything else. I guess I was lucky :0)

Hello Melanie,
Thanks for commenting! For these kind of details, it really helps to have a nice dark sky away from city lights. Unfortunately, with cities developping, it means we have to drive further and further out of town to see such skies.

Wonderful, Pierre. Love the colour of the meteor. It looks like it's pointing out Mizar/Alcor. Terrific capture! I was out last night for a bit, but saw only a few Perseids. Later, it got a little clouded over. Mary
