About The constellation Orion is famous for its wealth of colorful star-forming, glowing dust and gas clouds (called nebulas). Using my 200mm lens mounted on an equatorial mount, fellow UF member Ivo Leupi manually guided several exposures ranging from 5 seconds to 6 minutes. These exposures totalling 18 minutes were then co-added in Photoshop to create the final image. The colors that you see are as captured by the camera. The only post processing done includes levels, curves and some sharpening.

The bright nebula on the bottom right is known as M42 (Great Orion nebula). The bluish nebula above it is NGC1977 (Running Man nebula). On the top left hand corner next to the bright star Alnitak is NGC2024 (Flame nebula) as well as the fainter Horsehead nebula below it.

I appreciate the kind comment Mary! But I can't take full credit, since Ivo Leupi had an important role in making this image possible.
It was a fun challenge to try out some astrophotography... and I'm looking forward to doing more this season!

You sure know how to coax your equipment into doing its best work. This is another terrrific one.

Thanks Daniel! The easiest way to start taking some simple (but beautiful) astrophotography is to head out in the country on a clear dark night with a camera, wide-angle lens and tripod. Then let your creativity work for you. for example, it's possible to have great looking astrophotos when combining constellations or the Milky Way with foreground objects (like trees, water). For closer shots of star clusters and other deep sky objects, at the minimum, a telephoto lens and a mount to track the stars, along with other equipment becomes necessary. See:

Very nice, great to see something different. Thank you for sharing. I was just thinking about doing some star cluster shots myself last night after taking photo's of fireworks
