About This is a young Pileated Woodpecker who is on the verge of making its first ever flight. There were three in the nest yesterday. Now there are two. The parents stop feeding them and they then have to go out and do it for themselves. The adults are near by calling once in a while and while I was there I even heard the first youngster out in the woods making racket. It left earlier this morning.
After 1 1/2 hours I had to get back to work !!!
A footnote: This nest is located in Goseberry State Park. Earlier this season, the tree had broken off right through the nest exposing it to the elements.A result of the young male making the hole too big and not leaving enough material in the tree walls to support it. Park Ranger Paul Sundberg, made a roof and a volunteer climbed the tree and fastened it. Other wise the little birds might have been rained out and certainly would have died.
Technical note: took this image to 100% then cropped this portion out.

wow !!!!!!! I watching a woodpecker nest for a long time, but I couldn't go that near, because I don't want to disturb them, I used my telelens, but it was to dark, because the nest was surrounded with bushes, this is really gorgeous....lucky you !!!
