Hi Allen here is the about on this classic wooden yacht: Nordwind is an 88 foot long composite ketch. In 1938, Admiral Dönitz commissioned Burmester in Bremen (Germany) to build the Nordwind after a design by the then famous naval architect A. Gruber. Pre-World War II she won the Fastnet Race setting a record of 88 hours and 23 minutes that stood for two decades. After 1945 Nordwind was taken to Scotland as a war trophy and became the property of Lord Hugh W. Astor, who raced her on the Solent. Eventually she reached a state of disrepair.
In the late 70s Nordwind became one of the earliest classic yacht restoration projects. Camper & Nicholsons (England) started the refit of the hull, Bultjer (Germany) progressed this further and the refit was completed in Enkhuizen (Holland).
Sail plans and deck-layout were designed by Gerard Dijkstra and the new Nordwind combines ultra modern yachting techniques with the highest standards of traditional luxury.
