About I found this subject quite difficult, and I'm not sure these were the best three. All have pretty obvious faults. This one attempts to get in a little closer. Although the shutter speed was the same 1/500th sec., there's some of that motion blur I wanted.

Wow, Gary, you are certainly digging into the remote past here. This one's from five years ago, when I was still shooting film!

I hesitated over the cropping of this one, John, leaving in the arches to give a sense of the cover under which they were operating. But I think your crop is better. Thanks... (Did you notice how sharp the lens is?)

Can I make a suggestion here, trim it to a square image, the bottom half. It removes the slight fussiness which detracts from the subject.

For me this this one is the best of the drum series, including the environment makes it more interesting and it is very dynamic.

Chris, instead of mastering the intricacies of PhotoShop, as you have done, I bought the Power Retouche plugins, which are targetted at particular tasks. "Dynamic Range Reduction" is one of them, and in this triptych I used it to try to reduce burn out and boost shadow detail. But it's tricky... go a little too far and you get a lifeless image with no "sparkle." At least this still has some sparkle left.

If only a camera could see like an eye!! One day, perhaps!
I'm thinking of the eye's incredible ability to so balance the 'exposure' that there's no real 'burn out' and little detail totally lost in the shadows. Still, you've done a pretty good job in the circumstances, Roger.
I find this view a welcome addition to the other two, giving the viewer the '3rd dimension'.
Best regards, Chris

This is nice Roger, The first thing that attracts me to your work is the crisp clean colors...they are bright and vivid..I enjoy that. Another thing that I've noticed from your images is how clean and orderly things seem to be in Japan. Not having been there myself it's nice to get a glimpse through your eyes...I love this one too, very nicely presented...Linda
