About Taken at Zion National Park in Utah

I like the contrast between the colors of the rock face and the darkness of the barren tree. "Tsegi" is the Navajo word for Rock Canyon.

Will load the technical information later.

thanks... I think that has to be one of the best critiques I have ever got..but I agree, until you actually crop the sky you would think that it would look better.. thanks again

Wonderful colors here Paul, I like the contrast too. Funny I thought that bit of blue sky was distracting and tried to crop it out (for my own benefit) and it really looks better without the crop (in my humble and honest opinion). In the crop the tree looked cut-off with no place to go, trapped, and shut-in, so I really like that you left that piece of sky in the picture, and a place for the tree to go..I also noticed that without the sky the tree had a flatter look to it, so that little bit of sky gives it a dimensionality of realism...Wonderful image, smartly presented...Thanks for commenting on my image Paul....all the best, Linda

thanks... yes, Zion is great but it is hard to compare one canyon to another ..they are all different and unique..

Beautiful colors and silhouette. Was Zion as incredible as I have been told? I am wanting to see all the canyons.

The color of the rock is beautiful and really rich, especially with the black branches silohuetted. The sky is such a deep blue, which compliments this so nicely. It would be an interesting image without it as well, but I like what it adds.

Thanks for the comment...no doubt that photography is a very subjective art form. Although I disagree that the composition of this photo is not a nature shot, I appreciate the feedback. But I agree that there is an abstract feel to the image...

Unusual shot .. don't know if i'm fond of it ..
as an abstract shot it could count, not as a nature shot .. just my opinion .. Peter

Excellent compsition, Paul, with beautiful colors and the black tree standing out on the brown background.
Thank you for your kind words about my "Who am I realy?" (I am the incospicuous figure in the background, taken in 1966-7 in Kurdistan, northern Iraq.)
Best regards,
Rafi

Welcome back, Paul! superb tree silouhette against the rock tones. I believe that the blue sky breach in the right upper corner is fundamental; it, at my eyes, well balances all composition!
My compliments,
Marco

Just wondering what Tsegi was, thanks for the info, I like Native American culture and way of life. I like the photo too, above all the contrast between the red mountain and the black tree, maybe I would not have framed the triangle of sky, but not so important. Thankx for your comment. Bye, Max

Gorgeous shot, Paul - I love the deep dark black of the tree silhouette, especially against the wonderful colors of the rock face! You're right about the blue at the top - great with or without. It would be cool if it ran straight across, too.

Another outstanding capture, really marvelous nature image, I am in doubt if like it with or without the blue sky, though nothing to reduce the great quality of the capture and the composition. Saeed

Thanks for the comment.. I was debating cropping the sky..I think it works with and without it, each unique in its own way.

hi paul,

the contrast is for sure great. not sure about the sky part on the upper right. perhaps a more "flat" version would intensify the contrast - but easy to say if you aren't on location =)

nice technique.

Great silhouette and lovely warm colours in your backdrop. Very successful. Cropping off the corner of blue sky creates quite a different impression. Did you try it? (I think it's better left in...)

Cool !! The tree acts as an interesting device to call even more attention to the colors on the rock face. Well seen and shot.

I agree it's a very pleasing combination, the silhouette of tree against sunlit earthen colors of the cliff. A nice abstract.
