you know what now that i look at it again... looks like a 2:1 ratio on the girl's face, maybe a 3:1 would have been softer? ...just b/c her skin is so pure as a child.

Daren, I'm in an apprenticeship now and am LOVING what studio lighting is teaching me about natural lighting (although natural light purists would disagree with me). ;)

I agree Louise that it would have provided some more separation in the mom's hair and background, but I prefer the more natural light illusion. Although I do agree that there is a flatness in the girl's face. Do you remember what distance and angle the umbrella was to her? What f-stop and shutter speed was your camera set at and what were your umbrella lights readings?

I think the lighting is good, but that the tones are a little flat. Imho, the whites need a bit more of a contrast boost to really bring this to life. I don't use studio lighting (natural only) so can't comment on whether you need a hair or not *properly*, but I do think it looks lovely as is.

Hi Louise, and thx for your comment. I used a single 65" umbrella with a 500w light, eye level to the left. In fact, you can barely see the umbrella in their eyes if you look close enough. So far, I am having alot of fun with my set of lights, and have learned alot about man made lighting. I would eventually like to invest in a softbox, but for now I have 2 umbrellas, and a boom light. Thanks again for your interest!

I do like the lighting. Looks nice and natural. Although a hairlight would help separate her hair from the background, it would kill the 'natural' feeling of what you have. Expressions and pose are lovely. I wouldn't call this even lighting as there is a nice modelling effect shaping the faces nicely. What was the lighting? Soft box/ reflector?

Nice simple portrait and works well IMHO. Nice even lighting and no shadows. If your going to use this background I would suggest a hair light but other than that it looks good.
