About A Friend told me about a Great Grey he was photographing two nights ago. i raced to the spot and of course nothing. Tonight on the way home I went to the Stoney Point Road to see what the sunset looked like. on the way there it was pretty dark, and I saw something fly acrossed the road. It landed in a small tree right by the dirt road. i used the window for a rest, flipped up the onboard flash with the 300MM on the camera and shot. it was so dark i could just make out an outline. This is the result, although not as sharp and colorful as in daylight, I wanted to Post because of all the things wrong with the setup and still there is a reasonable image.

Well, but it's good enough to be GREAT! I love that surprised and confused face expression, and it's beautiful this owl! Looks funny that he sits on that pine-pin without that it bends.

Oustanding image, considering the obstacles you faced. But this just goes to prove yet again what photographic talent you have.
Well done Jim.

This is a great shot, Jim. Looks like he was as surprised to find you as you were to find him! Given the conditions, I think you ended up with a very nice shot.

Mark

p.s. I know my D70 has bailed me out of bad situations by giving me a photo better than I deserved.

Nice Jim, owls don't come that often around here, especially a Great Grey Owl.
I would be happy to have this in my collection.

that's not bad Chris, probably too zoom-compression. It look like a paint.

Just to get a shot is good, and this is good, he looks as surprised as you must have been to just spot him like that

While the shot isn't sharp, it's well composed and has a very interesting emotional tone to it. (S)he kinda looks irritated! I'd be happy to have a shot like this in my own portfolio.

Wow Jim, for how You came across this shot and what You did to shot it , it came out great!
What I like about it is the feeling He is in His natural habitat and His eyes are gazing through the dark!
Very well done!
My best...........JOHN

Keep going back, the same happened to me a few years ago with a Barred Owl and the final image was published in National Wildlife, I will post the image on my gallery soon. It will be worth it to keep going back, good luck :)~
