About Took the wife to the mall in the next town north then bascktracked 30 miles to were I had seen Owls yesterday, This guy was sitting nicely on the broken tree snag just posing for me. I saw 4 birds and got around 200 shots. This is a crop from a horizontal, using the 70-200 zoom with the 1.4 extender. I had to back off to about 135MM to get him in the horizontal photo.
This photo doesn't do justice to the original, I have found that to be true when reducing 8 megapixel images. I think its just too much crunch. any suggestions ?

Thank you so much for your comment, I use USM when needed, The trick is to take Raw and a small jpeg I guess. My camera allows me to do that. Just certain pictures come out that way.]Still learning, the prints by the way are awesome to say the least, I did this one 11x17 and its sharp as can be
thanks again '

Amazing owl picture. National Geographic quality. 10+. On the compression question the only thing that I can think of is sharpening after a resize, which you are probably already doing. I use the PS unsharp mask under the filter menu.

In regards to the " crunch Factor" I printed this image on a HP 9650 widebody . A 11x17 print, I was amazed at the detail I had never seen in the photo before, and that wasn't even at the max dpi (4600) it was 600 dpi. Now I have to save up for a frame ;-)

Pose he may do but he don't look too happy about it. Yet another fantastic shot Jim.
Pixel wise I usually complete all operations then merge the layers and then resize to 800 and then Save for Web to check image size is below 360k. Most times it's OK but lately I've been having noise probs.

Dorthy, No I am taking in jpeg yet, I need to switch to Raw buy some bigger cards and do it right, BTW this shot , joeg, right out of the camera is pristine in an 11x17 of my printer. So its the crashing and crunching of the pixels.

Looks good to me Jim, but have not seen the original. Went to a Nikon school a week ago and they talked about this. I am not sure that I understand all of it. If I can find some info on this will let you know. Don.

I just printed it 11X17 on my office printer, an HP 9650 using maximum dpi (takes a long time) and right out of the camera it is unbelieveable.

Yes I am taking advantage of the time. this is the 4th weekend in a row, its only about 40 miles and 30 of it is 4 lane. The Digital files don't fade so I'll get all I can get. this was the first trip where I got really good light. and cooperative birds. Its funny 10 miles up the road from this guy were two more you couldn't get within 100 yards of. I think you have to catch them napping and lazy.

Still getting into the owls.....I would take advantage of this situation as long as they let me.
Again Jim a awesome shot with great detail, color and composition.
I have no suggestions on the pixels, I do know that I have many a shots on UF that do the original no justice, maybe it's the fact that there is so much detail in a shot like this...
Not sure but it does still look great here.
My Complements on a very fine photo.

My suggestion is to send Me the 8 meg 11 x 14 color enlargement!!!!!LOL
Quite a crunch from 8 million to 300 thousand pixels!!It's pretty amazing to Me that the images are as good as they are!! Excellent detail and light Jim!Hope the wife didn't spend too much at the mall, unless of course She was buying You some camera equipment !HAhA!Hope You and She are well Jim! Give Her y best ok! Take care!..................JOHN

Evelyn,
I reduce by cutting the file in half on the long side. If its 3400 I drop first to 1700 pixels. then to 800 then 650 because 800 is the max and I add a border which makes it roughly 750 on a side This shouldn't be reduce by UF becuse its under 800 on a side.

This has been a great series of owl shots. I've been enjoying them! As to the reducing - how are you doing it? Are you letting usefilm reduce or doing it yourself? I always resize first and save to my usefilm upload folder. I think they come over pretty well that way.

as for megapixel problem. I have had some trouble also. all I can think is better photo programs like photoshop can somtimes work for me.

Fantastic looking creature! and love your composition and DOF a lot Jim! I can imagine the difference between the original and this one, the 20D really captures very fine detail, but it's normal to loose pixels when resizing, so I would suggest if you want to show the fine detail, to crop in closer to the subject?
