About Subject Background: Lovely Venice by night, seen from a shaky vaporetta with few light. Made this shot "by hand" with my new f/1.4 lens (which is great for D70, btw, even if it's very old). I know that this image could be better technically, but under these circumstances it was very hard to make this one near-sharp.

Photoshop concept: Add some general light to the image, nothing else.

Dear Gayle,

thanks for the in-depth, romantic analysis ;-)

I have to admit that Venice is really the town for lovers... with all the water & lights @ night.

As for the gondolas: There are different ones. there are some where you can sit and there are others where you have to stand. In the picture you see the monster gondolas ;-)

Take care,
Thilo

Looks like a painting!..it is how i picture Venice at night..how romantic!..the lighting is perfect,Thilo..it is what sets the mood..the dramatic reflected light colors on the water remind me of "dancing by the light of the moon"..sigh....someday..i hope to be here...regards,gayle (7+) (do they let just 2 people ride in those?)

Dear Pedro,

thanks for the kind comments. the foreground seems to be darker than the rest, yor're right. I guess this comes from the bad lighting that just comes from the back... But I'm not sure. =)

take care,
thilo

well in here it looks pretty sharp to me and it is quite impressive looking to the light conditions that you have to make such a nice photo by hand...pretty impressive my friend. The first plan looks a bit dark but the boats and background does look wonderful!!!
regards.

Dear Hugo,

I'm just starting with the right lenses now ;-)
The 50mm/f1.4 is definitely worth the price (very cheap on Ebay) and for me it's dream: hunting down the streets in the night with a powerful lens...

good to hear from you that the visual weaknesses don't weigh too much here. It was my feeling as well and therefore I decided to upload the image.

take care and thanks for the precious critics,
thilo

Hi Ursula,

danke fürs Feedback,

Farben und Spiegelungen sind für mich ebenfalls das Interessante an dem Bild ;-)

LG,

Hey bro,

I can confirm you that NOT the actual ride but the waiting area for the boats is the bad thing. I was near-sick on that shaky platforms.

take care,

Dear Antonio,

I have some more 50mm shots coming up the next days. 36 photos by night, and no one is shaky. this lens rocks for that purpose.

as for the focus: actually, I don't remember it. the image is untouched.

take care,
thilo

Hi Thilo, well handled shot, considering you made it "by hand". Excellent lens! That's the one I would like to get my hands on, too.... I like the business in this night shot. Nice capture, intersting and very lively scene. Sure, it can be improved upon, but I don't think the (minor) lack of sharpness is disturbing to it; I actually think it fits quite well with this image.

Cheers,

Hugo

beautiful shot. if you block out that bright yellow light--I just used my thumb--in the upper left it gives the picture a more pleasing quieter & balanced feel.

I did not try yet the nocturn shot with my camera, the same one you used; as I see here it is not bad, specially for central and right gondolas where the focus was centered I suppose.

Holy sh__!! This is beautiful, Thilo. This DOES have the classic look...wild splashes of vivid colors, woven into a romantic theme.. this is brilliant work, my friend (7++)!

Even though you say that it could be improved - yes we all could improve every image we have - but I really like the light and the feeling of floating - the shimmering lights give that effect to my eye - I like it . Kev
