Great capture Jim, I hope the photo was the only thing you caught though :-) I am so pleased we don't get these wild in the UK ... on second thoughts, we could sure have some fun at work ;-)

Den the difference is the 18-70 has its own internal motor, where as the 70-300 is driven by a motor in the camera. so it actually has a mechanical linkage, you can see it on the mating flanges, and therefore will make noise as there is a lot going on. the new 300mm that I lust after uses the built in motor and is as silent as your 18-70. Make sense ? jc

Hi Jim The 18-70 that I have is pretty silent in focussing but the 70-300 I wouldn't call silent. It also seems that it has to go to a datum point ie 70mm when starting to focus at the 300mm end. So there seems to be quite a lot of whirring to & fro. Den

Den Abouth the lens I have been chasing the " perfect lens" for some time. First it was the 70-300 like you got, then i traded it on a 80-400 tokina, WOW this is the answer right, well the big Tokina shooter I looked up to went belly up and got married and doesn't shoot anymore. And I found the lens wasn't as sharp as i liked. So I found this used 300 last year and got it in a trade for some manual Nikon stuff. I still have several Nikon Film Bodies of various vintages. thats where I am today. The shot of the antelope was taken with the 70-300 the skunk was last week and its with the 300 f4 prime I use now. Would love to have the newer 300mm with silent motor focus but !!! it never ends

Give this guy a wide berth, too right Jim. Is it an old pic or have you got a new lens? Den

It's what may have drifted towards you that you had to worry about, I guess, Jim!! Fortunately I've never got too close to one of these critters!! Good to see you had your long zoom on!! Nice shot as ever. Best regards, Chris

You don't want to get on the business end of this little fellow. I can guarnetee you that he will smell. I have encountered them before. Had them digging up my yard at night last year. They are no longer around this year. Pushing up daisies now.. Nice work Jim. Don.
