About I used a SMC Pentax-M 1:2/50mm with a Tamron-F Teleconverter on my K-1000 to take this shot. I don't have anything better (like a 135mm or something) so I used what I had but it kinda buggered up my ability to focus on a larger area. Not sure if there is a remedy for this (other than the obvious: get a better lense for this type of shot).

Jeff said it already: close the aperture further (with f/4.0 and 135 mm you can expect a very shallow depth of focus at this short distance).

That close and the dof is very narrow - even if you shot at f22 with a longer exposue. A "better" lens would not help with the dof.
