About We were deep in the countryside near the foot of Mt. Fuji when I suddenly had a sense of dejas vue. This scene reminded me so strongly of Scotland--except for the Japanese on the side of the boats, that is. It was late dusk, and the colours were almost gone, so I took them the rest of the way to monochrome.

Marc, I used the DOF figures on the focusing scale around the focus ring on my lens (it's an entirely manual camera, no auto focus). I set infinity on the 5.6 mark on one side of the lens and noted where the other 5.6 mark came, and then checked by eye that the nearest boat was no nearer than that. If I remember correctly, I had to put the further 5.6 mark a litttle nearer than the infinity mark, so those hills are probably slightly out of focus, but are too dark for it to show. Hope that helps.

Roger,

Such great depth of field at 5.6 even considering a 35mm lens! What focus point did you use? Do you have general guidelines about this (eg, focusing half way between foreground and background)?

Is that the Loch Ness monster there on the upper right-hand side of the lake?

Hi Roger, Love the lines in this one, Great curve in the row of boats... Also, the reading figure adds a very strong element to the scene. I do think the hut on the left is a bit distracting, though. With the fading light, B&W is definately a good choice. Nice shot!

Cheers,

Hugo

This works well in b+w, I think. The contrast and range of tones lends a little drama and those beautiful leading lines from lower right to left center show the eye where to go, after which it can roam feely, taking in the many details in the image. A placid scene with visual harmony.

(Thanks, again, for your information and advice. Looks like you have more than one Voigtlander.)

Hi Roger,
i very like this shot, specially the composition
with rythmic boats, mountain at background and calm sea is great,
also b&w fits very well with this composition,

Regards
Baki

I see what you mean, Roger. Definitely a Scottish loch feel to this scene. The line of boats curving round towards the foothills makes the shot for me ~ that and the person reading on the 'beach'.
Good to see you loading up again.
Have a good weekend.
Best regards, Chris

Gib, you have a Bessa R and Color Skopar 35/2.5? Congratulations! If I could only have ONE camera I think it would be this one. Great lens! Allow me a second lens and it would HAVE to be the wonderful 21/4! I hope you enjoy using it half as much as I do!

Roger, I can see where this is a bit like Scotland in the terrain and all. I don't remember there being many small boats though. It sure looks peacefull enough! I see how you are often plagued by the local skies. Will the Bessa take a yellow or red filter? 'Course that would only help to darken any blue which seems to be scarce. This is an image where a neutral gradient filter would not work. Oh, it would control the sky okay but then you would have all that reflection on the water which would be brighter and you eye would know something was wrong. One could tilt it and that would work but who cares - that is the nature of the land. Busy man tonight! JB
