Thanks for your comments and interest Cindi. You are right, this was not taken at night. I have attached a copy of the original. The shutter speed is an error. The actual exposure details were 1/400 sec @ F6.3.

It was taken about 4.30 pm on a bleak Winters day. I wanted to retain detail in the water so set my exposure to retain detail in the highlights. I think I also used a 2 stop gray grad.

To me the pleasure in digital imaging is the ability to translate the out-of-camera image into something more like what I have in my minds-eye when I pressed the shutter.

As Ansel Adams was quoted as saying "the negative is the score, the final print is the symphony."

I was reading an article in Black & White Photography magazine recently about Bill Brandt. The senior Curator of the Victoria & Albert Museum in London, Mark Haworth-Booth said, after viewing an exhibition of Brandt's work in 1970. "it was the first time I had seen a photographic show that moved me. It was then that I realised photography wasn't to do with facts, it was about imagination."

Regards John

John after further analyzing this with your shutter listed and f5.6 - you fooled me...this is no night shot at all with those specs - correct? Impossible at 1/1500 f5.6 - you got me! Day for night - cracked down! Regards, Cindi

Cindi Czaja   {K:5314} 7/8/2004
Hi John outstanding night shot! Now I gotta ask you...did you change any settings in white balance? Say to "cloudy"? Definitely looks like tripod again. With the detail I see...I don't see any change in ISO settings, thus my question regarding white balance. BRAVO again - well done. You got a 7 from me. Kind Regards, Cindi

I love the husky tones in the foreground John, the light on the grass and the cabbage tree flowers.
Really a terrific atmosphere and I'd say I am moved by this if I was was not utterly stilled.
A tremendous success in hashed light and retention of details as Matheson may be referring to.
So glad you are here.
