Hey Peta! I didn't realise you were also on usefilm. Small world ;) I very much like the effect this one has. Cold and almost haunting. I don't think I have heard of the poem - who is it by?

So pleased to see you back, Peta. For me this potent image is more evocative of a Gothic or Expressionist mood than illustrative of the poem that accompanies it - something I think to do with the ghostly figure in the black dress.

The original had a washed out sky? Was the tree in the original? If it was, then you did a spectacular job of darkening the sky without affecting the tree. How did you pull that off? (Especially on a tree with so many branches!) I can tell a lot of effort went into this photo - the snow and ice detail is wonderful. I also like the hint of fog in the foreground. Not only does it give the photo a bit of depth, but it makes the blend more convincing. My only nit is the moon. I wish it was more substantial. Perhaps that sentiment is cliche, but I feel if it were a bit larger and placed higher up in the photo, it would make the lighting more consistent and the photo a bit more balanced.
Glad to see you posting again! I was going through Peta withdrawal!

Peta, one more observation. I would probably have tried to illustrate her poems by defaulting to the use of iconic symbols. You don't [except for one well placed and scaled small one] and that's another reason I think this image is so successful.

Why am I not surprised to find you illustrating a poem by the Celtic mystic Jessica Powers. :)
This is wonderfully done on all levels! For example, on the surface you perfectly capture the ?iridescent trees of light? of the poem?s ?landscape,? while at the same time plumbing its depths with the solitary figure of a dislocated spiritual journeyist [my word] wandering through this image of a brittle and arid earthly world. I can?t imagine a better visual expression of this poem!
You are a one woman mystic revival movement!
However!.............As I believe technical critiques are the order of the day at UF I suggest moving the moon to either the right or left by .99 millimeters.....for no particular reason. :)

Ice Storm
The language of the heart would desecrate, The chastity of this moon-blinded night, these iridescent trees of ice, these great, ascetic areas of silver light
that have been fields before the winter rain froze on the snow to magnify the moon. The trees and vines tinkle a thin refrain like a glass windbell's tune.
Let those who go abroad be solitary, stifle the heart and see how this unknown and brittle world, unreal and legendary, was filmed in crystal for the mind alone.
Jessica Powers (1940)
