About I had always heard of the destruction elephants caused but had never witnessed it first hand until this moment. It took only a matter of minutes to flatten a square kilometer. It was truly an amazing sight and honestly their aggression was a bit scary.

i like your story (but watch out, i bet her mama is close behind). african elephants definately have an incredible presence. personally, i am terrified of them! they are my favorite animal in the world, but after being chased by two different ones on two different countries, i dont think i could again come as close as you did here! it's amazing what personal observation teaches us about nature. got more shots of elephants?

Now Roy this is a wonderful photo and you are a brave soul, but its your photo journalist duty, to enrage the elephant and get a extremely intimate charging shot(grinning). Are you still in Africa or are you back home. You have a enough African photos to do a wonderful book, but Im sure you ve heard that before.
Beautiful as always,
Dustin

well, yes, we like to think of them as gentle giants, but I have read what they can do to a man if they have a mind to it. nevertheless, they are fantastic creatures, and u r sure representing this one in a different way!

It must have been a tremendous experience, Roy.
I can imagine how aggressive this beautiful and mighty animal was. A "bit" scary??? I would most probably have thought it "awfully" scary and I'm not even the kind of person that easily gets scared!
Anyway.... this is a wonderful shot. I like it particularly for the dark tones: they are a perfect expression of danger, fear, and of a sinister atmosphere
Thanks for sharing your adventures in words and pics, dear Roy
Best regards - Emgy

Roy, this is as good as it gets to show us the agression against the natural life.
My travels have been fine so far, thanks for asking. I came to Uganda yesterday from Kenya.

Hallo Roy! This portrait of the elephant is nice! Even little dark. The shot was difficult and the try is worthy my friend.

The darkness to me in this image is well suited and is married well with the comment.
This magnificent creature has been hunted to the far reaches, the extinction of it's species hangs by an invisible thread while man looms over it menicingly. (Is there any wonder for the for its expression?)

Great shot Roy.

Love to look at elephant pics because of my youngest daughter. Although this elephant is so dark, was he really this dark? That sounds really scary to watch their aggresion because of their mass thank god for that 300 mm lens huh? How far away were you really do you think?

Roy,
this elephant wanted a few bananas, it's difficult to see his eyes but I can tell he WANTED a few bananas. if you simply handed him a few bananas...story done and he might look a little happier and trained like my boring photo:)

I'm glad you found the wild side.

As always, thanks for your comments. I do always read them and most of the time agree :) You?re right; the shot isn?t technically what it should be. I?m not big on excuses ?either I got the shot or I didn?t? But here it goes. I had my camera on auto bracket and was able to punch out 3 frames before the driver had to quickly back out, as several elephants were about to climb right over the top of the jeep. It was dark and pretty much just chaos. I posted the photo because I really loved the shot and thought it to be unique. Please keep the comments coming; you always seem to see something that I didn?t.

Again, many thanks and take care my friend.

Roy

Very atmospheric with the darkness of th image. Reminds me of the stories heard where hunters trailing elephants in the bush suddenly see this frightening sight from only a few feet away.
Great one Roy.
Regards,
Graham.

Excellent photo! Very dynamic! I had always thought of elephants as being fairly gentle creatures. Shows how much I know. They're so massive, I guess if they were in an aggressive mood, they could show it in a big way. How frightening! Great shot!

Hi Roy, Amaising shot! Your comment makes it even more amaising. It must've been very impressive to witness.

Disregarding the story behind it, (however bloody impressive one....) I think the image is a bit dark. Probably difficult lighting, knowing the F100, and the lens you used. Referencing it to the high quality of your other work, I think that one is of a slightly inferior (technical) quality.

As a reportive shot, and on an aesthetical level, (taking your story back into account) it is amaising. The destructive action, the power and the frightning scene is very well captured, and the dark tones of the image as well as the quality of the photo might even enhance the atmosphere. The leathery texture of the skin is perfect.

I can see why you posted this one. Thanks for sharing!

Cheers,

Hugo

The details/tectures captured here are brilliant. You must love the sense of adventure in order to continue to do what you do. I love adverture...but in my field of work, I only deal with the little kids scarring me.

Huh... it DOES look scary! The yellow flower is covering a little bit of the eye which could make it look like if it's glowing of anger! What a difference from those Indian elephants with huge eyes and calm friendly appearance. Very interesting, Roy! You have really seen things from close, that most people will never see more than perhaps on tv.
