The toughest thing about Velvia is holding the contrasts of your scene together. The rocks and the sky are at least 2 stops different in exposure. Velvia will give you 1/2 stop latitude, which means that if there is more than 1/2 difference in exposure, you'll lose either your highlights or shadows. In this case you exposed for the sky which worked well, but your rocks are black and detract from the scene. Artie is right in that it is important to go to a place and just sit and watch what happens with the light.

Another idea would be to recompose the scene, so the "black" rocks do not dominate as they do in this shot. Keep shooting, it's a great attempt. :)

ok Mike you are on to something here.......do a JOHN SHEPHARD with this.......go to this scene and sit there and wait.....look at the light from sunrise through sunset and look for the right moment where the light does it all..sky..colors..reflections..everything..it will paint this scene for you...than and only than do you shoot it...
Watch the light vary carefully and how the variations affect all that your looking at...when the image jumps up and kicks you in the " " than capture it...
