Hi Hugo,
It's a good designed set of shopkeepers, with your short narrations. I really like it :)) I had the same difficulty with malaya people, they don't like their photographs too, but sometimes: (one more shopkeeper from singapore to your collection)

Well, Hugo, he is looking at your face, not your camera. I have mixed feelings about taking photographs of people who clearly do not want their pictures taken. (at least while they are watching...LOL) But I have heard that this culture, really DO NOT like their pictures taken. I'm not sure if I would have done it or not....but then now as I think about it, I probably would have attempted it........now I'm talking in circles.
This photograph really draws one in for a good long look! I like the bright light, adds to the photograph. After I get past the obvious, (colors, expression, etc.) I really start looking at the things on the walls, speaker up on the right side with all the wires, pictures on the wall in the back, his dusty shoes.......so much to see. I'm glad you took this picture, it brings us another culture! GOOD JOB my friend!!
Lori :)
ps...I appreceiated your comments on my two latest photographs. Especially 'Sea Watch', I had real mixed feelings over that one. And I can't believe that I did not notice the tilted horizon, something I am usually picky about! I had to go look at it again, alas, you were right! Now I want to delete it and redo it! LOL Thank you again!

Hugo, He definitely has a speculative look - this is a wonderful shot - maybe a bit bright for my taste ;) but still wonderful just for the expressiveness of it...

Hi Hugo!
As I promised i am back. I am starting from here. This is excellent. Poetical mess, Great character. I like his face full of suspiciousness as a real arabic tradesman. The only disturbing is the light on the top, but it gives historical feeling to the pic. May be a spot measurement, or average type could be a little bit better in this case, to reduce the force of the light. I like you not to crop it, the top of the Arch is closing your pic. Sometimes the conditions determine the possibilities. I like it and put it to my faves.

Hugo, he looks like he was on to you! That's not exactly the welcoming look you'd expect from a shopkeeper, at any rate! Excellent shot, especially considering the circumstances. Beautiful colors and interesting ceiling and walls. A lot of interesting detail! Carolyn

Hugo your story of how you got this picture makes me smile.... With this shot it takes away much of the imagining of this shot, his look I think is of....what is this guy up to. LOL you sly dog you....LOL I think he knew. The picture itself is very interesting, I can see why you wanted to capture this. The items in this picture I find very interesting to say at the least. Great Capture... Regards Lee Harris I do think you was busted....lol

When I saw the thumb I thought he was praying, but I think he is counting his inventory.
Great composition showing the detail/color of the carpets and the photos on the wall.
The lighting and exposure is excellent, it makes me feel like i'm right there in the shop.
Well done...

hugo, this dude is definitely giving you the "eye". doesn't look like he liked you very much. ;^) i'm glad you explained what you meant by "from the hip". i was going to ask you how you managed to catch these folks without having them a) get angry or b) suddenly posing. this one has got to be my favorite of the shopkeepers. the look on this guy's face makes me feel like we are intruding in his space and definitely not wanted. however, he'll give us a moment and see if we walk away without too much fuss. excellent shot! kudos to you on the picture and your ability to shoot 1/60 from the hip while hiding and having it come out this clearly.

Groeten, Lex..

Hugo, that is really fantastic. I'd make a lousy journalist ~ I'm too self conscious shooting pictures of people who do not want their picture taken. As a result, I appreciate shots such as this even more. I know how hard it would be for me. (I guess that is why I take so many pictures of things, instead of people). Bravo! Lou

Hugo, I always ask permission to photograph . . . after the fact. At least in the public domain. People are more sophisticated or more suspicious these days, it seems to me. You have a memorable imae, a real environmental portrait here.
You are right about the red clad man in your last comment. That wa back in the days when I routinely underexposed to get the nice, rich colors in transparencies.

Hi Hugo! This is another of Your great talking picture from bazaars. I like them very much. Thanks for Your comment of Hunderwasser. I saw Your photo, it is the same view, really and there are quite no differences, althought You were nearly of two steps to the wall. My photo was taken June 8th 2003 late afternoon. I have also another photo of next house in my portfolio which is some meters along the same street. Did You see any more HW houses in Vien? Thanks. By. Jiri. (I am sorry for "raped" photo :).

Hi, Hugo. Thanks for the comment, etc. On the unauthorized thing, I never was keen on that, but I completely freaked out when I found out I (or obviously anyone) could get up to 2 years in jail, plus fines, indemnizations and confiscation of all material associated to the "crime" (computer stuff, even your car if you drive home in it from the "crime scene") for taking unauthorized photos of people in public places! Of course it wasn't written for the amateur but for the paparazzo, but it still is written so in Portuguese penal code.
