About Okaylet me have it! It was a cloudy eerie day and In the woods I found this rusted old car left in the bush, I imagine it has been there for 30+ years and shrubs have grown around and in it. This looks dark but somehow speaks to me.
How could I have got it lighter or is this just BAD!

The dreary day adds to the mood of the picture. It is sad to see collectables like that abanded like that. I love the shot but it would have been good if the vehicle had been a little closer to expose it better.

I love these kinds of shot Les. I like what Michaelle has done with that crop.

I love Michaelle's work on this! and Les, definitely go shoot this in the winter if you can - tis a damn near perfect setting. I would do a series on it - of each of the seasons :)
I am working on some of those myself with old bdgs and such.

Thanks all for your comments. You don't know how much I do appreciate the help. The camera I have has an automatic focus. Yes, I need to switch to some manual settings. Time to take the training wheels off the bicycle and go it alne.
Need better film and I expect the camera could use a good cleaning. It is 5 years old now!

Les,

I agree with the girls on this. But being a cloudy day should have been great opportunity to shoot this. It appears that you were shooting into the sun, and that is what blew out the sky. Go in tighter, get the sun to your back or completly cloud covered. By all means USE a better film! Go with something a little slower. I have had good luck with Kodak supra 100, you can buy that from b&h or adorama pretty reasonable. With a shot like this you need to use a tripod, which will let you use a real slow film. The flash is a good idea, it will let you highlight the old car itself. I'm not familiar with the camera you are using, is it auto focus, auto exposure? If so, can you by-pass that to make it do what you want? I would like to see some of the shots with the snow on the old sedan, maybe in black and white. Hey keep it up, and dont get discouraged.
Later my friend,

Russ

This subject has sooooo much potential... and I bet during the winter (when there are less leaves and less clutter) it would be an even better shot. I have taken Dawna's suggested crops (and added some of my own flavor - please forgive me) to give an idea of what potential this has.

I think both Dawna and Sue have given you good suggestions. :) And no, this is not BAD.

The thing that strikes me about this photo is the bushes surrounding the car are almost the same color as it is. Cropping the way Dawna suggests leaves you with what looks like a tritone - and a very attractive one at that :) Well seen!

Okay, here's my two cents.

I adjusted the black and white point levels in PS.

Thank you Donna, good point. I took some other shots using flash and they look awful. I will take your suggestions and maybe go there next Spring and on a sunnier day.
Right now there is snow and it has been gloomy for some time.

well its all where you based your exposure Les. It does look to me like you did expose for a darker area, hence the blown out sky, but in a scene like this, I would expose for the darkest area on the car, lock it in, reframe the shot, framing very tightly with the car and some of the brush. You would then get the best possible brightness of this scene. failing that, maybe some fillflash, but i do find that sometimes fillflash changes the whole feel/mood of a scene, unless you have diff setting for your flash.

as this image is here, i would crop out the sky and trees to just the point where no sky at all is showing, maybe try working the levels or curves a little in ps. but even with just the crop, I like it - its dark and has a painterly effect almost. Well seen Les!
