Beverly: This photo brought me into becoming a member of UF (along with one other). It is extremely powerful as a monochrome and has a foreboding air about it. A "wall mounter" for sure, with a little PS of foreground. Y'all give us some more of same.

  0

Clara Showalter   {K:663} 2/5/2003
First impression- wow, what an amazing image. Things that draw me in further:

There's a hole in the bridge: by shooting in conditions where a strong reflection was present, an illusion is created that forces the viewer to look through the image.

Line of trees behind bridge: these also help pull the viewer's eye into and through the picture.

Framing: the image is effectively framed by the tree branches to the left, the sky overhead and the hint of branches to the right.

Excellent job mantaining detail in the image. With black and white it can be easy to lose small details when you tinker with the processing end. There's no part of the image where my eye says,"where'd the picture go". The blacks and whites are all distinct. None of them merge into a blob.

B&W was an excellent choice for this shot.

This is a wonderful testament to this truly haunting place. I've been wanting to go back there since seeing the site about 15 years ago. You did a marvellous job of capturing the ultimate question of this place: how could such a beautiful site have been the place of so much bloodshed? Hard to believe that at this place and the surrounding environs, around 25,000 men were killed or wounded in about 16 hours.

Patsy Ng   {K:31} 11/14/2002
My eyes were first drawn to the bridge, supposedly the subject of this photograph. The reflection of the bridge leads my focus into the image.

The photographer applied the one-third-rule well here where you can see the bridge and the riverbank sits nicely on the one-third region of the image. This contributed to a balanced composition.

The choice of black and white mode is also appropriate given the past history of this bridge. One advantage of using monochrome could help the photographer to show a complete picture without the distraction of the surrounding colors. In this case, the effect is almost perfect. The black and white mode brings out the stillness, quietness and peacefulness of the place. The photographer seemed to be telling the world that this is what is should be; "no wars equals to peace".

The depth of field used is effectively narrow that you know exactly where the photographer wanted you to look. The fence of distant trees and the low cloudy sky forms background of the bridge. The still water and the tall leafless tress form the foreground. All these contribute to the overall balance and mood of the picture.

It gives me a very serene, soothing therapeutic effect on looking at this piece.

Bev, this photo has particular meaning to me because my husband and I were on our way to view this bridge on the fine morning of September 11, 2001. While we were there is when it started to truly sink in that something absolutely dreadful had happened, and yet, here was this bridge, looking lovely and peaceful, standing as a testament to a horror long past. Had we as a Human Race learned nothing?

I like infrared photos. I like them because they look cool. I really like this photo just because it's infrared, but because it's a great photograph as well. The stillness of the water, the motion in the sky and the stark trees all create a tense, yet hushed atmosphere. I find it very emotionally stirring!

I think the infrared filter added to this photograph rather than the annoying way it is used by most photographers. Nice mood, nice sky, what more could you ask.

Thanks Tony! The filter I used says on the container R72 Infrared. I've held this one up to a noon day sun and all you can see is a small dark red spot. I don't know whether Cokin makes one or not, but I've had some great results with this one. I always convert to BW mode on my camera, otherwise the images are all red. Thanks again. ~ Beverly

Lovely reflections, great atmosphere. The tonal range is impressive.Never heard of an infrared filter,I wonder if there's one in the cokin series,it looks interesting ,do you have to use it in combination with any other filter?

Beautiful image. The place looks so wintery and cold. Reminds me of the west of England (For some reason).

Yep, very good picture. I think your picture captures elements of the battle very well. The drama in the sky, the starkness and coldness of the leafless trees and finally the stillness of the water perhaps reflecting the quiet now that the battle is over. I think you did a good job here.
