PS ... the kid could be *really obviously* too big using my trick if there were other, normal-sized, people in the background.

I think you almost got the look you were after. My first thought was "wow, that's weird", before I read your comment.
The kid almost looks like a paper cutout pasted onto the background.

Hmm ... maybe that's the way to get what you want ... photograph the boy and the background separately, then paste them together after the fact in Photoshop. Then the boy could be *obviously* too big for the environment instead of just *what's-going-on-here* too big.

Does that make sense?
