About I gotta admit it---the three objects here are dried cow pies. (Chris Ofili, take note!) Art is where you find it.

I wouldn't know about the health of the cows, I live in the big city. Probably the pies shrink when they dry out. I can't imagine what cows eat on sand dunes anyway, as there are just scattered wisps of grass.

May others continue to see that what I shoot is real crap.

That makes sense Ken. I thought you might have healthier cows there. I've seen these pies in the king-sized variety on occasion, but not in an evironment like this one.

Steve, I know what you mean (see my photo "Space and Time") but in this case I was already pretty close, at most 2-3 feet. The dried pies are only about 5 inches across. If I filled the frame much with an object that size, it would have to be a macro shot, without any sky. I probably could have gone another foot closer, it might have helped.

I know this might sound strange, but don't be afraid to get close to that "crap". Seriously, if they were what interested you in the first place, perhaps giving them more space in the frame might add impact. It feels a little too empty. Filling the foreground with these short lenses can often times add more interest. Keep them coming Ken.

Though I made light of it in my comment, I didn't really do the shot for humor, the pies were just interesting weathered objects in the sea of sand.

Chris, I didn't know at first what they were either when I saw them live, they're so completely dried by the desert. I thought they were roots or something, until I moved one with my foot.

Alexander, the darkness at the bottom appeared when I increased contrast (in Photoshop, using Curves) a little to bring out the ripples in the sand. I couldn't seem to avoid the darkness, so I gave up and left it in. Anybody have suggestions?

Early viewers rated this very low without comment--it would have been nice to know if they found artistic merit lacking, or just objected to the subject matter.

Little bit dark at the bottom, otherwise great shot
