Dear Kim... You are totally right.. those houses are distracting, only problem is that I live in one of them and I wanted it in the picture for "romantic" reasons (you never know, one day you may look at the picture and tell kids.. I used to live here). Beautiful dogs, I see you have got already some good suggestions from some of the best around so I will not bother you with more. Well... just a suggestion.. get closer to them. Goldens are so photogenic, mine loves to pose. I can only imagine how funny would be to put the three of them together..

It is amazing how hard it is to get two dogs to look at the camera at the same time. Mine will only face me one at a time. It is as if they know what im doing and don't want it. ("I said, no pictures, please.")
The only problem with the background is that the wood is about the same tone as the dogs.

Kim,
I love the golden color and I think the crop works good here too. I honestly think the only thing that would make this a better shot is if both dogs were looking in different directions.
As always thanks for the comments on my work.

What could be better than a dog picture? Why, a picture of two dogs, of course. The thing that immediately grabs me is the similarity of tones and colors in the background, almost matching your dogs' coats. I think you really want to go for a contrasting background to really separate out your dogs. I think your original chrome's quality was probably much better than the scan.

Thanks Dave! I've never had much luck with the two of them looking relaxed and leaning on each other, as the way I get them to pay attention and stay in one place is to bribe with treats and toys. But I agree that the interaction would make for a great scene, and since I have two, and lots of time, I can certainly try it out.

Your dogs seem so much better behaved than mine. I would have trouble getting them to hold still long enough to keep both in focus and in the frame. I do like the framing, and there is good balance. The reddish background blends in with the dog on the right (Niko?). Background is slightly distracting, maybe try a little wider apeture to blur the background. For a calendar I think the customers will want the 'unique image'. For example, one dog resting his head on the back of the other as they sleep. Physical contact, some kind of connection between the two dogs might work better. I have to confess that when I attempt to capture this, one dog always trys to get up and lick my ear, then the other jumps up and the game is over. But I think you will have more success, good luck.

The lighting on the dogs is good, but as Ray points out the background is too busy. Also I would open up the left side a bit.

Thanks for your honest critique, Ray! And it gave me a lot of things to think about... I actually do have an image with them both looking towards the camera, but I liked this one for the fact that the female's tongue is out, looking natural. I will have to look into PS'ing the bg, or maybe giving it an all over blur... Thanks again!

Kim, Beauitful dogs, Love the color of thier coats. Some suggestions (for what there worth). The background is very distracting, It has not only black and white areas, but possibly the biggest problem is the wood of the building, It is very close in color to the dogs and even the texture of it in places merges with the dogs. I would suggest that a plainer background against which the dogs stand out would be an improvement. Another possible improvement is the cropping as you mentioned. The dog on the left is very close to the edge, which sometimes is ok, but because he (she) is looking to the left, it draws one's attention out of the image. Better if you can get the dogs looking at the camera or into the center of the frame. With animals this can be very film intensive. I took the liberty of replacing the background (see below), quick job, not very good, but it may give you and idea of what is possible. Don't feel that you have to use PS or something like it to control backgrounds, with planning it can be done when the image is shot. Don't take all of this as knocking your work, just some suggestions to improve it. Good Work!! ray w.
