I think the lighting is fine. Since you didn't get both of Mom's eyes (wish you did), I'd try cropping her left eye out entirely (cropping out her left eyebrow too).

Seems like its gonna work out for ya with practice.. by no means do I have any studio lighting experience.. but the catch light in the baby's eyes seems really big and it sort of has a doughnut shape.. not sure what the dark center is.. but that's distracting to me... also i think the lighting on the baby's face as well as on the lady's face might have been better if the light source was moved further to the left of the camera.. .but again.. I'm just guessing from what i've been reading.. Goodluck!!! I want to start a poor man's studio soon too !
