Thanks Ersan, Kevin, and Richard. Kevin's right: it is rather hard to do--it certainly is for me. Richard, what's happening is that the car is rotating relative to the film plane during the exposure so the blurring of the front and the back is actually motion blur and not caused by shallow DOF. Typically, the trick is to try to render the driver sharp and the blur around him gives a nice sense of speed. It's a difficult thing to try to control, though; sometimes the wrong part of the car will end up sharp.

Very nice, the motion is definitely there! I'm surprised more of the car isn't in focus with f16. That's the only thing I can see, it would be perfect if the front and rear end were in focus.

Excellent shot. Many do not understand how hard it is to compose and focus and track an object in excess of 200 mph as the CART machines can do at the Mile.
