About
A slight variation on an earlier post, composed to emphasize the vertical extent of this gigantic excavation - the largest open pit mine on the planet. It is more than 3/4 mile deep. The walls at the furthest extent are nearly 2 miles from the camera, with snow still showing at the higher levels. The mining trucks that look like miniature toys in the photo are likewise, enormous.
Kennecott is the second largest copper producer in the United States - providing approximately 15% of the US copper needs. Today you might consider it a "goldmine" as world copper price is soaring.
Impressive pic Peter. I have never visited this place which looks to me much more man made architecture than a landscape. Once it was a landscape but society needed to be wired as well. Let's work more on fibreglass and be more wireless in the future.
