Coc Ly Market is some three hours drive from Sapa, in northern Vietnam. It is so close to the Chinese border that you may receive an SMS from your mobile operator welcoming you to China. :-) The region differs from the rest of the country because of its mountainous character and its diverse ethnic background. Train is the only viable way of transportation to reach Sapa, that’s why it is relatively less-touristic compared to say, Halong Bay, or Hanoi, the capital city. However, things change rapidly in this part of the world, and I suspect it will become a favorite destination as soon as the government establishes alternative means of transportation. Hence, Coc Ly, a relatively pathetic market, is prone to become more touristic because a new road under construction will be opened next year. Sapa is home to many tribes such as H’mong and Dzao, which migrated from China centuries ago. Some villagers still don’t speak Vietnamese, and the living conditions are poor, even by Vietnamese standards. Coc Ly Market, organized on Tuesdays, is a perfect example of the ethnic diversity of the region. I believe the colourfullness of the market can’t be over-estimated, and it is easily comparable to the South American markets, if not more colourful.
I increased sharpness & brightness, did some cropping.
