Gary - I almost bought the 300-800 about a year ago. Instead I bought a Nikon 400mm f2.8. In my "research", the only negative on the 300-800 was its' weight. Image quality was very good, AF speed was OK and lens construction is reported to be top notch. If you get one, you will need a very sturdy tripod and a gimbal head so you can easily swivel the whole assembly. You can look at reviews on this lens at fredmiranda.com.

Hello Pat Oates, thank you very much. I like doing shoots like these, the fast unpredictable action is very challenging to capture. The Sigma 50-500 mm has been a good lens, though I would love to get in closer to the action with tighter shots. Do you or any one you know have any experience with the Sigma 300-800 mm zoom?
