About Perhaps not the best technical shot but the view of the birds flying away and how free they are make me smile. Hope you like it.

I like this shot and that its in black & white. It gives an extra depth to the moment captured! The bird on the top left especially conveys freedom very well.

You are very welcome, Julie! Just trying to say something meaningful except the usual "fantastic, excellent, wow 7++++", which is the best way to convert this forum of photography to a forum of incompetence by witnessing the widespread unwillingness to work on something. And as most "natural born artists and photoshopographers" here seem to have developed a very special allergy against anything that objects their "masterpieces of fantasy", you can imagine the usual amusing reactions on such statements!

You are on the right way, and surely you will get further and better. Relying on PS (and all other witnesses of the incapability to master the camera) for correcting and beautifying some image afterwards, is both a hindrance against improving and also useless. No bad image will turn to a good image by applying 1356 filters. (This is what the liga of natural born artists doesn't like to see. ;-)) It's both honest and creative in the best degree to present images as they were shot with the camera. Sometimes some small things are OK, like for example cropping, or cloning off some small unwanted detail. But these things have to be just slight changes that do not totally alter (and most of the time also devastate ;-)) the image.

The cropped image is perfect to me! The conclusion for the small improvement considering camera/lens usage would be then to slightly turn the camera to the right. Or just to crop that small part off the left side.

On a further note, you could go for an exhibition with such a series of that beach. Perhaps you'd really go there again and do as many shots as you can.

I'd put this one also under the noses of those who keep on using so many cheap excuses for defending the naive belief that photography (and arts in general) is some kind of self-service bar. You know, I don't need to learn, I'm an artist! ;-)

Cheers and continue, continue on that path!!!

Nick

Nick, this has to be the most comprehensive critique I have ever seen on UF. I thank you so very much for this.
As I learn more and more about photography I see that I don't want to be just another photoshop user or just another digital shooter, I want more than that. I don't want to have to use photoshop for every single picture I take and honestly I really don't. I get more satisfaction from people critiquing my work for what really is, at least for now I know I will learn so much more this way.

I cropped the guy on the left, what you think?

Again, thank you SO very much for providing such a wonderful feedback and your words of encouragement.

Nick Karagiaouroglou Nick Karagiaouroglou   {K:127263} 3/29/2008
Yes, and feed the UF with such excellent images! I am so glad to see this one, since it seems that depth and distance are more and more neglected and we proceed to a more and more 2-D format filling attitude, as if this was the only possible kind of photography. But such images make my day!

Let's look at the implicit leading lines that the seagulls produce. They make the distance quite tangible. And of that timing under the great focus I am impressed!

The guys at the left are a little bit underexposed but in this case it brings also more tension because of the light difference to the rest of the image. I don't know if the funny guy with the rod at the extreme left is OK there, since the implicit leading line from the other guys toward him doesn't converge to the same target point like all others do. A small "contradiction in perspective", that is. Perhaps you should crop him off as mercilessly as he dared intrude your image? ;-) Or also a small turn of the camere to the right?

Anyway, this and some almost unnoticeable pixelation on some seagulls is the only possible bettering I can assume here. Anything else is extremely good as it is.

Now, if this is not the best technical for you, Julie, then heavens might stand by us when we see your best!

Keep it up!

Nick
