Hey John!
As it happens . . . we have photographic PROOF from several UF photogs that the little scoundrel gets into mischief on ocassion. Obviously I would never have permitted this . . . but I get up at 4:00 a.m. so only found this while investigating some noises in the early morning.
I doubt Gene was seeing much of anything when I took this shot . . . and drunken, reveling stuffed bears (with or without a bible) are scary all the time.
The broken cork and the bottle of wine . . . well . . . ONE of these bears helped themselves to this wine . . . I NEVER supplied it! . . . and, as I understand it, one tried to chew off the cork before the corkscrew was found.
Hope this clears it up!

Of course, the person who took the photo must have been stone cold sober - nicely composed, sharp image, despite the low-light conditions and ursine distractions!

Maybe someone needs a quiet word with Gene's guardian. Is this any way to allow a young bear to behave, especially after his recent adventures?
The red bear is scary, but the blue bear is downright hallucinogenic. And for a minute I thought I'd spotted a purple flower-bear lurking in the background. Or is this supposed to convey the way Gene is seeing the world at the time?
I won't raise issues such as the etiquette of putting your head on the food plate or, worse, sitting on the food plate. Nor will I comment on the faux pas of presenting your guests a wine bottle with a broken cork.

Great point about the wine bottle Nick. Your interpretation is not so very far off the mark. I completeley agree about the depth and chose the shallow depth to try to emphasize less "still life" and more 'regular candid' per the fantasy topic of the image. Spot-on my friend!

This is a nice to view image, full of color and a certain kind of spontaneity, live! The top of the wine bottle is perhaps a bit too near the edge but the rest of it has enough room to "breath". I don't get as much the impression of party animals but rather that of a celebration dinner - which of course is interpretation only.
The gradually softer focus as we proceed to the depth makes it feel "real". It doesn't allow it to get to some state of "still life". That matches your intention well.
Still I wonder what it would look like if everything were in sharp focus. It would be different undoubtfully but which way - I guess more like still life then.
