Amazing strikes! Sharp and clear, very well captured Dave here, and because it was day you haven't lot of time for veeeery long exposure so in 1sec that is GREAT!!!

Thank you Barbara. Don't blame yourself for not being fast enough. The average human perception/reaction time is 1.5 seconds. It is impossible to react to lightning in order to press a shutter. People who capture it with that method are lucking out and should've played the lottery.
In order to do this, you need four things: camera that allows continuous shooting, tripod, cable release and LOTS of memory cards. You take off the auto focus, manual to infinity. Set your shutter speed and aperture manually for the exposure and let it bang away.
As a good example, I shot probably 4000 photos that resulted in about 20 captures last night alone. I ate up 7 gigs of memory cards and had my laptop working full-time downloading and clearing cards of photos.
Once it gets dark enough, you can slow down to 30 second exposures, which helps on using up memory cards. I began during daylight hours and was going through 2 gig cards in about 5 minutes.
So it's not an easy proposition.... and is really a lot of work in the field.
