I can relate -- I'm an amateur who has benefitted from the guidance I've gotten here on UF. Doyle always provides good, constructive advice, plus he knows a lot -- but don't tell him I said so -- don't want him to get a big head, he already considers himself the king of cool ;-)

Thank You so much Maryanne... I am sooooo lucky to get such Great Advise - I do treasure it and honestly have grown (Yes- it is true just look at my back pages & see-Lol))))
I started out with a point & shoot and am still learning of course but have a much better camera and am learning my own settings so I feel with-out the help I've had - especially from Doyle Chastain ..I would never have made it this far , this fast :)) Geez..I don't mean to sound boastful it's just a drastic improvement as I know there is always room for so much more to learn for me .......and I appreciate your help too .

Best wishes,
Michele~

Nicely captured expression -- easygoing and open. I saw you got lot of good constructive advice on this post, which is one of the most valuable apects of posting on UF. I think you've got some very good elements going in this image, Michele.

Very nice smile and a great portrait in b&w! A fitting portrait of an author for a book. I also feel Doyle's suggestion for the crop works better.

Oh I just read this infoprmation 'After ' I have commented on your re-work of Jenna & I do like Jenna II better than Jenna I --

Yep that would be me asking about filters and also use them :)) Jenna is such a doll it would be hard to get a bum image of her :))

Thank YOU for valueing my opinion my friend ...

Warm Regards,
Michele~

Excellent points made by Dave . . . your camera supports bracketing which would come in handy for these situations and it might be something to read up on and practice. :)

I must say I can't add much to what others have said excpet maybe a field trick or two.

When faced with this bright sun, try zooming in on the face and get your meter reading from there. Either hold the button halfway down or remember what it was and then go to manual and set it for that.

Your Nikon probably has a white balance range, too. Find it and set it for three exposures while shooting important stuff. That way, you'll have three choices for every shot and use the best white balanced photo.

Michele you are always SO kind to me! Rina offered some tips under my Jenna photo and I took some and changed from an orange to a blue filter. If memory serves me right it was you(?) asking about colored filters in B&W's? This will show you the difference in tones between the orange and blue filter but - more importantly - I would love to know your thoughts on the re-work. It's almost like a whole different photo. We're all still learning around here . . . some (like you) quicker than others (like me)! ;)

Warm Regards,
Doyle I <~~~~~

Nicely done, Michele. He looks like a nice person with a wonderful open smile.
The crop and the background need some attending and the face is a bit "hot" but overall I like the effect and the radiant smile that you captured so well.
--Best to you, Jan

Nice image and a very natural expression. When composing your shot in your mind's eye . . . try to be aware - even hyper-aware - of the BG. I would have tried to eliminate the dock due to the strong horizontal lines along the top of his head. Also . . . he's a little too centered for my personal taste. Just a tad distracting to me, mind you . . . but there will no doubt be others who disagree with me . . . and a big kudo anyway for a really great pose (whose idea was that?) and natural expression. Looks like a great person to have worked for.

Regards,
Doyle I <~~~~~

Hi Nicki !!!!! This is a very special day now :)))
Thank YOu sooooo much for your generous comment my dear on this portrait as I am no good at portraits ...well I have not enough experience with them.... He is a sweet sweet man ...
We both miss each other as we had a great relationship ...We still do but not seeing each other daily it can't be the same...it fades a bit ... but I do stop and see him when I can....just as a good friend of course.
Happy Days are returning with the healing of Your-self and our Girl !!!!!!!!

A Big Hug and smile from Oregon my dear !!!!
Love ,
Michele~

It's a nice portrait Michele, surely that guy knows to pose and smile well to the lens, I think the white ballance needed to be a bit better here as his sunshine part of the face shine the light a lot..... that could be a bit better about that...6/7 ;-)
Be well!
