About On May 17, 2007 Mercury was just below the Moon--it's the little white dot below and to the left of the Moon. They were a pretty sight as they set over the water. The section of the Moon that is able to be seen even though it is not illuminated is due to Earthshine--sunlight refelcting from the Earth.

Hi Linda. Thanks for looking and for your comment. Actually, Astronomy has been a passion of mine for quite a while. Everyone needs a peaceful place. Mine is under a clear sky in a quiet place and as little light pollution as possible. With my telescope set up, I can enjoy viewing the wonders of our universe. When I get to ejoy it with friends from the wonderful Astronomy group I belong to, it is even better.

Mary this is very beautiful, I love the colors and the lines on the horizon. You're quite the astronomer too...I'd be like, what's that? LOL..I see Venus, Canopus, sp? and Sirius often but wouldn't know the others...very impressive, not only your skill at taking this shots but also your knowledge...:) Linda

Hi Michael. I'm glad you like this shot. This is a crop taken from the first picture I posted in the Comments area. Yes, originally it was a bit noisy. I ran it through NeatImage (a free download) to deal with the noise. My camera has proven to be decent. However, I do not really know how to use all the setting to their best potential. Also, I don't claim to really understand how to really use ISO and f settings, etc. To get these shots, I tried a few settings in terms of time. Actually, I tried that for a few nights before so I did not take time on these nights doing that. I left the ISO at 80 and let the f adjust on ts own. 2 seconds seemed to give the best results, so that's what I used. Timing is important. The thing to get these shots is to take them in twilight (or a bit before sunrise). Then you get the nice light and blue sky. When it gets really dark, these kid of pictures do not work for me.
Right now, the Moon is still dancing with some planets, but it is later and dark and doesn't work. As Astronomy is a passion of mine, and now so is photography, I keep track of when such scenes will occur at the right time.
I hope this explains what you were hoping. If not, just ask again.

Your fascination with photography and astronomy plays out well. Hopefully you can give us a primer on how to expose these scenes correctly some day - night photography is difficult to do with a digital camera. Noise problems, usually. Thanks for all the comments, find inspiration.

Hi Doyle. Thanks for the compliment. I do not consider myself as skilled. However, I have learned a lot from trying things out, comments and suggestions from UF members as yourself, and viewing some terrific work on UF. My little camera has served me well. It now has broken--well one piece, but that eliminates a lot of options. Next week I am going to have get a new one. Oh well. ;-)))

Ok . . . after commenting I saw the other shots . . . . the surface of Venus is overexposed and I can make out NO details . . . oh wait . . . that was a different "photog" . . . - ;) - Just teasin' ya' Mary. We both know these are all stand alone quality shots by a skilled photographer. Congrats!

Soft and beautiful . . . like a warm summer night. Good timing for the capture as it works very well in the composition there . . . with subdued, yet magical light . . . and wondrous colors and reflections accented by those two heavenly 'jewels'.

Three fantastic shots - the one on the 18th appeared on Sam's and my anniversary - and we even had a chance to notice the lineup ourselves! Thanks for sharing these - even prettier with a shimmer of moonlight reflecting off of the water!

This is a picture from May 18, 2007 when Venus (upper left), the Moon, and Mercury (in a straight line with Venus and the Moon just above the red section) made a lovely symetrical scene.

Here is another view of the scene that night. The bright object in the upper left is Venus.
