I understood it not to be a program in itself DAVE- I know it's an option in PS but not in one program I can use YET- I do appreciate the story of such a strange name for an opposite reaction tho .....
Thank YOU,
Michele~

Michele: Unsharp mask is not a program in and of itself, it is an option in most photo editing programs (I assume most, but definitely in Photoshop) under the filters/sharpen drop down.

I was curious as to why it was called unsharp mask when in reality, it sharpens. I asked once in the UF forums, I think. Somebody explained that it is an old term used back in the days of film, something often applied in the darkroom stage.

Thanks for clearing that up, Gary. I kind of figured that is what the term meant.

Unfortunately I have slept since I took this photo and I don't remember if the light on the building was actually purple or not. Other photos I took of it turned out different colors so I will have to look through them and see what the exposure times are.

Since I am 80 miles from the building, I can't just run over there some night to check. I will next time I am there at night, though. My curiosity is peaked actually.

Dave, reciprocity failure is a term used for film that has been subject to very long time exposures, like 30secs+ at night. It often results in strange colour casts which some photographers take advantage of to produce pictures like yours.

Thank you, Michele. Unsharp mask is what you should run every digital photo through while preparing it for print or exhibition. It takes the "softness" out of the photo, makes it just a little sharper. You select a level that looks best for the photo, either very slight or (usually) low... higher levels of unsharp mask tends to ruin the photo.

Thanks, Shirley. It is almost foreboding... just think what I could have done with one of them superduper lenses you shoot the black hole with.

Thanks, James... actually, this building was hard to shoot because of all the variances in light.

Thanks, Gary. I don't know what you mean by reciprocity failure, I'll have to look that one up.

Excellent night shot Dave !! Love the perfect angles, depth, perspective, details, color, and composition- Really well done- especially love the fact it is as YOU took it - with NO PS work ((((x-cept whatever the un-sharp mask is))))
Love it Dave :))

Best regards,
Michele~

Beautiful abstract, Dave...love the color.:) But this gives me a 'haunted' feeling...all those dark, empty-looking windows...

Nicely shot. I really like the resultant color palette and deep sharp shadowing.

Makes a good abstract, you can't blame reciprocity failure for this colour, but don't know if I could look at the real thing for too long without imagining the smell of lavender.
