Oh . . . I've certainly watched Marcus' work with green, envious eyes for a long time. I'll take that as a complement even though his birdie shots are mostly in flight and more challenging still because he has to use a Canon, not having a Nikon handy!! :P

Thanks Jan . . . I was thrilled with the SB800 Speedlight . . . particularly that I can use it as a remote flash so the light direction is possible from any direction. Even mounted on the camera it has a diffuser, 90 degree vertical adjustment possibility and a 180 degree horizontal tilt allowing a variety of bounce light options. That makes Macro work and difficult lighting a TAD bit easier . . . as well as high speed flash for high shutter speeds! Totally appreciate the comment (as always) my friend!!

Amazing detail and perfectly exposed. The hawk has an expression like "Don't mess with me" while he gives you a brief and regal pose. I think you have the strobe augmentation nailed; I have been practicing lately to get good results with a speed light (catch lights, fill, etc.) and still have a long way to go in being satisfied. This is a perfect example of where the mighty strobe really goes a long way in providing just the right light including the catch light in the eye.

When he took off on that tether I almost fell back on MY tether (if you know what I mean)!! There were three redtail hawks there . . . a Peregrine (of course), a burrowing owl and a great horned owl . . . as well as a variety of other birds of prey!
